Aleutian Trench

The Trench

The Aleutian Trench serves as a possible underwater guide along Angel’s route across the North Pacific. Jonas argues that seismic vibrations associated with the trench could help explain her movement southwest, making the deep-ocean geography not just a setting but a clue to how the shark navigates.

Geographic Role

In Jonas’s account, the Aleutian Trench lies along a chain of deep-sea features belonging to the Ring of Fire. He proposes that Angel bypassed the Bering Sea and followed vibrations from the trench across the Northern Pacific toward the Kamchatka and Kuril trenches. Those gorges continue southwest past the Kuril Islands and become the Japanese Trench, which leads into the Mariana Trench, the species’ home for more than a million years. The trench therefore occupies a key link in a proposed route from the North Pacific toward the Mariana Trench.

A Proposed Navigational Corridor

Jonas connects the route to sharks’ ability to orient over long distances using Earth’s magnetic field and seismic vibrations in fault lines. He had initially believed Angel was following migrating whales, but came to suspect that the trench system offered another explanation: an underwater corridor whose seismic signals could guide her across the ocean. The distinction remains uncertain in the discussion. Captain Morgan cautions that Angel might still be following cetacean migration, so the Aleutian Trench route is a reasoned hypothesis rather than a confirmed account of her navigation.

Route and Narrative Significance

The subsequent account of Angel’s journey gives the hypothesis a concrete geographical sequence. Using the Aleutian Trench as a bearing, she crosses the Northern Pacific and follows the Kamchatka Trench southwest. Farther along, she passes the Kuril Islands in the Anadyr current, with the Kuril Trench’s Vityaz Deep lying below her at almost 34,600 feet. Her presence disrupts migrating whales in the Sea of Okhotsk, where she kills and feeds on a fin whale and her calf. The Aleutian Trench is not depicted as an isolated destination; it is the first named guide in a connected route that carries Angel toward the trenches and waters leading back to her ancestral home.
