Harpoon gun
The TrenchThe Harpoon gun is the weapon used in the capture attempt against the Megalodon. In the decisive shot, it turns a carefully timed pursuit into a failed restraint: the harpoon hits the shark, but cannot pierce deeply enough for the anesthetic to be delivered.
Deployment
Aboard the William Beebe, Harry Moon watches the trailing whale blubber from behind the Harpoon gun while Richard Diefendorf tracks the shark from high on the central mast. Moon keeps one hand on the trigger and a portable headset to his ear, awaiting updates as the Megalodon approaches. When Mike Maren urges him to take the shot, Moon swings the gun toward the open ocean and waits for the shark to appear behind the ship.
The Shot and Its Failure
Moon fires as the cream-colored shark passes beneath the vessel. The harpoon launches with a bang, trailing steel cable through silver smoke, and strikes the base of the Megalodon’s dorsal fin at a depth of sixty feet. The sea slows the lance; it lacks the force to penetrate the shark’s thick skin deeply enough to deliver the anesthetic. The animal twists along the bottom and shakes the harpoon free before the drug can reach it.
Narrative Function
The weapon’s impact is real, but its intended effect never follows: the harpoon wounds without restraining. That gap between striking the target and controlling it makes the gun a turning point in the capture attempt. Once cornered and wounded, the Megalodon goes berserk, and the instrument meant to subdue it has helped precipitate a more dangerous encounter.
