Terry Breaks into the Prometheus to Access Tokamak Secrets

The Trench

Terry’s nighttime break-in aboard the Prometheus is an attempt to wrest information from Benedict Singer’s control, but it ends before she can reach the Tokamak secrets she seeks. Carrying an improvised iron weapon into the sub, she moves through restricted parts of the Benthos and starts to access the Geo-Tech system; Heath Williams interrupts her at the point of entry, exposing both the danger of the attempt and a security barrier she had not anticipated.

Preparation and Motive

At 2:10 a.m., Terry leaves her cabin barefoot with a two-foot hollow iron bar in her right fist. She has spent fifteen minutes wrenching one end of a bed frame loose, then used the leverage to free the other. The bar is a poor substitute for Sergei’s hunting knife, but it gives her something with which to defend herself. Its makeshift origin matters: she is not equipped for a planned operation, but is turning what she can take from her surroundings into a weapon.

Terry listens at her cabin door and hears only the Benthos’s generators. At the companionway she catches the crew talking in the galley about the immense prehistoric fossil that the Prometheus unearthed hours earlier. She continues through the sealed stairwell, passing F deck, which contains stores, equipment rooms, and the nuclear reactor. Rather than join the crew or remain within the areas open to her, she presses on toward G deck, an area reserved for Benedict’s personal staff. Her route is quiet and deliberate, but each descent takes her deeper into a part of the ship from which she is excluded.

Entry into the Prometheus

On G deck, Terry crosses the empty corridor to the submarine docking station. She presses her ear to the watertight door, recognizes that listening there is futile, and opens it. The circular vault is empty. In its center, the Prometheus’s conning tower protrudes from the floor; Terry opens the outer hatch, climbs down the ladder, and enters the docked sub.

The Prometheus is dark apart from the fluorescent glow of its consoles. Terry is alone inside a vessel surrounded by water at sixteen thousand pounds per square inch, a physical reminder that the attempt is taking place in a confined and hazardous setting. She locates the computer console and boots it. Her immediate motive is personal as well as informational: Benedict has spent the day manipulating her emotions, and she resolves that this time she will act for herself. The Geo-Tech menu appears, as it had earlier, and she highlights the Tokamak option. She is about to press Enter when she hears a sound from the docking chamber above.

Interruption and Reversal

Footsteps force Terry to abandon the console and find cover. Hurrying toward the rear of the submarine, she painfully strikes her shin against another console before ducking into the bathroom. She hears the seal open and realizes that someone is coming down into the Prometheus. Convinced the intruder is Sergei, she grips the iron bar in both hands and raises it, preparing to strike as the footsteps pause by the computer station and then approach the bathroom.

When the door begins to open, Terry swings at the silhouetted figure’s head. The man deflects the bar, twists her arm behind her back, and covers her mouth and nose before she can scream. The physical reversal is immediate: the weapon that gave her confidence cannot overcome an assailant who can disarm and restrain her. He identifies himself as Heath Williams, releases her, and Terry bends over gasping for air. The scene’s threat changes from an unseen intruder to a recognizable, if still unexpected, ally.

Security, Assistance, and Unanswered Questions

Heath leads Terry back to the computer and explains that the GTI file she was about to access requires a security code. If the correct code is not entered within sixty seconds, security devices would go off. Terry had reached the Tokamak option but had not entered the file; her attempt is therefore interrupted before she obtains the information. The distinction makes the failed entry more than a narrow escape from discovery: she did not know that the system imposed a timed safeguard, and her next action could have triggered a response throughout the ship.

Terry asks whether Heath followed her to protect her from Sergei. Heath says Sergei will not bother her that night because he slipped something into Sergei’s tea at dinner, leaving him asleep. His intervention thus removes the immediate threat Terry feared, while also showing that he anticipated where she might go and came after her. He then asks why she was trying to access the Tokamak file. The episode ends with that motive still to be explained. Terry has challenged Benedict’s emotional control through a concrete act of trespass, but she has neither secured the information nor escaped the risks of the ship’s restricted systems.
