Iovis
The Vampire Prince’s BrideIovis is an ancient ice planet and the ancestral home of the Drakonaar, the dragon-descended people who rule through the Rothgar dynasty. For Prince Darilth, it is not merely a birthplace or political territory: it is the world whose threatened future makes his private search for a true mate a matter of planetary survival. The planet’s history, royal succession, and dormant healing power are inseparable from the wider fate of the worlds under Rothgar protection.
World and Drakonaar Heritage
Iovis had been inhabited by dragon-like creatures for thousands of years before the Drakonaar became the dominant royal lineage. When the Drakonaar first invaded the planet, they could not shape-shift. The decisive transformation in their history came when the Rothgar King mated with the native Dragon Queen. Their union produced the first hybrid Drakonaar able to assume dragon form and convert a mate into a shifter. Over succeeding generations, that bloodline developed into a powerful shapeshifting race, making Iovis the biological and cultural foundation of Drakonaar identity.
The planet is described as an ice world, in sharp contrast with Earth’s warmth and heavy atmosphere. Darilth’s later experience on Earth emphasizes how foreign Iovis’s environment is: Earth’s gravity makes walking difficult for him, its air is thick, and he requires breathing pills to function there. Iovis therefore represents the physical norm of his people as much as their political home, while Earth becomes the alien environment in which the succession crisis is unexpectedly resolved.
Royal Power and the Draco’s Eye
Iovis is governed through the Rothgar throne, to which Darilth is heir. His royal duty is not limited to inheriting authority. He must find his true mate, produce an heir, and regain the power of the Draco’s Eye, an ancient blue stone with extraordinary healing abilities. The Eye can heal the sick and injured and make its bearer a powerful ruler and protector of Iovis and the other worlds in the star system. In the wrong hands, however, the same power could become an instrument of destruction, enabling planetary invasion, annihilation, and enslavement.
The Eye has been dormant for centuries. It passed to Darilth’s great-great-grandfather after the death of the last worthy bearer, but that successor’s mate could not awaken it. Without an active bearer, the Rothgar rulers could no longer protect their affiliated planets. War followed when barbarians from a distant galaxy attacked neighboring worlds, and Iovis eventually came under threat as well. The planet’s vulnerability therefore gives sacred and political weight to Darilth’s mating quest: the failure of one generation to awaken the Eye becomes a continuing danger for an entire planetary system.
Darilth’s Exile and Return
Darilth has spent decades exiled to R13, a distant moon of Iovis. His failure to find a mate has made him proud, angry, reckless, and cynical; he has responded by plundering planets and invading cities. A witch’s prophecy says that his true mate will come from another world and will be different even among her own people. His soldiers search throughout the Delta Quadrant without success, until a commander suggests that Andromeda 13 may offer a better chance. Darilth reluctantly begins that mission, but an engine failure forces his ship to crash-land on Earth.
On Earth, he recognizes the possible fulfillment of the prophecy in Ella, a human woman with stark white skin and ice-blonde hair. Her unusual appearance makes her seem almost like one of the Drakonaar, although she is human. When Darilth first sees her tending a garden, his fascination and physical reaction recall the witch’s prediction. The Draco’s Eye later confirms what the prophecy implied: when Darilth gives Ella the silver band bearing the blue stone, it shrinks to fit her wrist and glows brightly, identifying her as his destined mate and awakening its power.
The awakening changes the political meaning of Darilth’s return to Iovis. Darilth and Ella secretly marry, but he remains under the King’s sentence of exile. He decides that they must leave the castle and return to R13 while presenting Ella publicly as a slave, because the King does not know that the Eye has awakened. If their marriage becomes known, both are threatened with execution. Iovis thus functions as both sanctuary and danger: it is Ella’s route into Darilth’s world, but its royal law makes their union a capital offense.
Betrayal, Assassination, and Political Uncertainty
The secret cannot remain secure. Keralth reports to his father, King Rezelith, that Darilth has married the human woman. Keralth views the marriage as a political opportunity because Darilth’s defiance of the King’s orders appears to place him beyond succession. Rezelith is skeptical of the report, but the central question is whether Ella has awakened the Draco’s Eye. Her ability to do so threatens to overturn Keralth’s expectation that Darilth’s exile has removed his rival.
Darilth attempts to send Ella to R13 while he travels separately, monitoring her progress through his communicator ring. The Eye glows when he touches it, and he expects to hear that Ella has reached safety. Instead, his housekeeper tells him that she never arrived. Almost immediately, the Council Chief sends another message: King Rezelith has been assassinated, and Darilth must abandon his current mission and return to Rothgar Castle. Communications with the castle fail, including Darilth’s attempt to contact Keralth telepathically, leaving him isolated until his ship reaches Iovis months later.
When Darilth finally lands on Iovis, guards seize him in the docking area and announce that Keralth wants to see him. His return is therefore not a triumphant homecoming. The ancestral planet receives its heir as a detained political suspect, while Ella’s disappearance, Rezelith’s assassination, and the secret awakening of the Eye leave the succession unresolved.
Narrative Significance
Iovis concentrates the novel’s conflicts between inheritance and choice, biological ancestry and cross-world union, and protection and domination. Its Drakonaar origin story presents hybridity as the source of power: the royal line itself began through a union between an invading people and the native Dragon Queen. Ella’s arrival echoes that history, since a human outsider becomes the true mate capable of awakening the power that centuries of royal succession could not restore.
The planet also gives the story a mythic structure. The dormant Draco’s Eye makes Iovis a world waiting for renewal, while Darilth’s repeated failures and eventual discovery of Ella turn his exile into a reluctant journey beyond the boundaries of his own civilization. Yet the return is not complete or secure. He reaches Iovis only to encounter arrest, betrayal, and the consequences of a murdered king. In that reversal, Iovis becomes more than an ancestral setting: it is the pressure chamber in which private love, ancient prophecy, royal violence, and the survival of neighboring worlds are forced into the same political crisis.
