Aleksander Dumoulin and Thomas
The Vampire's Pet: Romantasy at its darkest (Blood and Kisses Chronicles : A Dark, Gothic Romance Series)Aleksander Dumoulin and Thomas are adversaries brought into direct conflict by Esmeralda: Thomas’s daughter, a member of his werewolf pack, and the vampire Aleksander had bought as a pet. Their hostility begins as a clash over her abduction and treatment, then becomes a family and supernatural dispute when Esmeralda is revealed to be Aleksander’s fated mate. Thomas’s protectiveness explains his opposition, but it does not dissolve their grievance or settle the consequences of Esmeralda’s choice.
Origins of the Conflict
The enmity takes shape against a wider divide between vampires and werewolves. Aleksander knows that werewolf packs generally avoid the vampire city and that relations between the groups are wary. Esmeralda, raised in a distant pack of werewolf witches despite being born without a wolf or magic, has little knowledge of vampires. Aleksander purchases her from a human pet store and initially treats her according to the owner-and-pet arrangement he describes to her. For Thomas, who regards Esmeralda as one of his people and his daughter, that status is an intolerable insult.
The immediate crisis follows the pack’s attack on the vampire mansion and Esmeralda’s abduction. Aleksander pursues the group into the forest, calling for her and following her scent. Thomas meets him with a dozen wolves, and Aleksander cannot see Esmeralda among them. When he demands to know where she is, Thomas condemns him for taking one of the pack and making her a pet. The dispute is therefore not merely a contest between rival species: it is personal, centered on Thomas’s daughter and on Aleksander’s claim to keep her.
Forest Confrontation
Thomas makes the conflict physical. He threatens Aleksander, then transforms from a man into an enormous wolf, his clothes tearing as his body changes. At his signal, the pack attacks. Aleksander fights back, but the wolves outnumber him; Thomas eventually drives his claws into Aleksander’s back and forces him to his knees. Even badly wounded, Aleksander continues to insist on recovering Esmeralda. His determination to reach her sharpens the contrast between Thomas’s effort to take her home and Aleksander’s insistence that she return to him.
The confrontation also carries an older grievance. When the families face one another, Aleksander accuses Thomas of killing his butler during the attack on the mansion. Thomas dismisses the butler’s death as deserved. Aleksander is too injured to pursue the accusation physically, but the exchange establishes that the conflict has already cost a life and that the prospect of becoming relatives will not erase his resentment. He recognizes the irony that Thomas is Esmeralda’s father, even as he continues to regard Thomas as responsible for a death he will not forgive.
The Fated-Mate Dispute
Alyson, Esmeralda’s mother and the pack’s Luna, intervenes while Thomas’s wolves are poised to attack. She challenges Thomas’s authority to disregard her choice and asks whether Aleksander is truly Esmeralda’s fated mate. Aleksander confirms it. Thomas rejects the possibility that the Moon Goddess would unite a werewolf with a vampire, treating the cross-species bond as an impossibility. Alyson answers that the goddess does not observe racial boundaries and that the bond between fated mates is more important than those divisions.
That revelation changes the terms of the dispute without immediately reconciling the men. Alyson releases Esmeralda, who runs into Aleksander’s arms. He is bleeding and battered, but her return brings relief; she tells him she feared she would never see him again, and he says he would have searched to the ends of the world. Their reunion makes clear that Esmeralda is not simply being transferred between competing claims. Although she had tried to escape Aleksander at first, by this confrontation she has chosen to remain with him. Thomas’s earlier description of her as one of his people is answered by her own decision, which Alyson accepts as consistent with the fated bond.
Protection, Choice, and an Unsettled End
Thomas’s resistance is also framed as paternal fear. He says his daughter’s life is at stake and later warns that if Esmeralda dies, Aleksander will endure centuries of mourning. Aleksander responds that he could turn her into a vampire so that she would live as long as he does. Thomas refuses; Esmeralda agrees to the possibility. She further makes her choice explicit by saying she loves Aleksander and accepts that becoming a vampire would mean giving up the chance to lead the pack. She notes that her brother has always wanted that role.
The exchange does not end the hostility. Thomas’s objections persist even after Alyson accepts the bond and Esmeralda declares her love. He invokes his duty as Alpha to protect the pack and states that vampires cannot be allowed to visit. Thus his relationship with Aleksander remains adversarial, but it is no longer only a struggle over an abducted daughter: it now concerns whether the pack’s safety, Thomas’s authority as a father and leader, and the supernatural bond can coexist. The encounter leaves Esmeralda’s choice clear while leaving Thomas’s acceptance—and the future terms of contact between the vampire and the pack—unresolved.
