Molineaux statue
The War of the RosesThe Molineaux statue is a familiar figure from a pair of boxing statuettes, its distinctive survival in the Roses’ collapsed house giving it a brief, charged afterlife amid the debris. Found intact where nearly everything around it has been damaged, it becomes the focus of a struggle between Josh and Eve—and is broken in the process.
Appearance and Discovery
After the house collapses, the children search through the rubble. Molineaux is still intact, its black head remarkably shiny and clean, the buffed figure maintaining its familiar pugilistic pose. The contrast is stark: dust and wreckage surround an object that appears almost untouched. Josh rubs one of the figures against his shirt and blows away the dust as the children examine the pair.
The Children’s Struggle
Eve reaches for the companion Cribb statue, while Josh takes hold of Molineaux at its base. For a frozen moment, the children hold the figures with equal strength. Each claims the object as their own, and their tug-of-war ends with a sharp crack: the two figures break apart, leaving plaster fragments in their palms. Molineaux’s intactness, which had distinguished it from the wreckage, proves temporary; the children’s contest turns the surviving pair into more debris.
Significance
The figures’ enduring boxing pose acquires an immediate echo in the children’s physical struggle over them. In the aftermath of the house’s destruction and their discovery of Oliver and Barbara dead beneath the rubble, the children’s quarrel makes the objects a small, concrete site of conflict. Molineaux survives the collapse only to be shattered by the people who find it, while its pairing with Cribb makes the breakage inseparable from the sibling contest.
