Jacob's second submersion and recapture
The Werewolf Mates Anthology (Erotic Romance)Jacob Pitman's second infiltration and recapture turns a daring rescue into a trap: having escaped Silver Sky Research once, he returns for Jaz and is undone by a security device he had not realized was tracking him. The sequence makes the facility's power concrete in its cameras, access cards, guards, and alarms, while showing how Jacob's determination to find his sister repeatedly brings him within its reach.
Motive and the first breach
Jacob's return follows an earlier, carefully timed break-in. Jaz, his younger sister, had taken a job at Silver Sky Research's facility in Montana; after a month there, she disappeared. Four months after she began working for the company, Jacob was still searching, with the police unable to find her and Silver Sky stonewalling him. Information from Jaz's ex, Rodney Gilcrist, had pointed him toward the company's experiments on employees in Idaho. Jacob concluded that Jaz was at the facility and spent more than a month planning how to get her out.
The plan relied on a brief gap in the guards' routine. At 12:37, when the guards shifted positions, Jacob expected three minutes to enter, disable the camera feed, and loop dummy footage at an unmanned guard station. From there he could disable the holding-cell sensors, unlock doors along his route, and trigger a false alarm elsewhere. On the night of the operation, he used an ID card stolen earlier that day and obscured his face with a sweatshirt hood. He looped the video, set off a fire alarm in the south quadrant, and hurried down the hall with only thirty seconds before the next guard was due at the station.
The building's ordinary appearance sharpened the contrast between its public face and its function. Beige walls, dim fluorescent lights, paintings of wolves and other animals, office windows, and name tags gave the corridors the look of a routine workplace. Yet Abigail was being held in a cell where even the bed, toilet, and tiny sink were exposed to her captors. Jacob's first breach had helped free her, but it had not found Jaz; the rescue therefore solved one immediate crisis without ending his search.
The decision to return
After Abigail left with Max and Kelly, Jacob remained at the motel door with his hand on the knob, wanting to run after her. He was unsettled by the prospect that she might disappear from his life, especially after their intense night together. But he recognized that abandoning the search for Jaz would betray the purpose that had brought him to the facility. He imagined the anger Jaz would feel if she learned he had stopped looking for her to pursue a woman he had known for only twelve hours. That judgment restored his priorities: he decided to go back to the holding facility and find information about where Jaz was.
Waiting for nightfall no longer seemed safe. Jacob reasoned that Silver Sky would know Abigail had escaped and would repair the weaknesses his first operation had exploited. He took his gear, loaded his truck, and used back roads to reach the same facility. Black SUVs rushed past him in a no-passing zone, an early indication that the company had reacted to the breach. He parked more than a mile farther away than before, covered the truck with branches while keeping it ready for a quick getaway, then hiked toward the perimeter with his backpack. From a tree, he watched the guards through binoculars and saw that the security force had already doubled.
The tracking card and recapture
While watching from the tree, Jacob searched his pocket for a mint to keep himself awake and found the keycard he had used to enter the previous night. The discovery changed the meaning of his distance from the facility: each card carried a tracking chip with a limited range. He had been too far from the motel for it to register there, but, with the facility now in sight, he feared that its computer might be able to detect him. His careful approach had not accounted for the access card broadcasting his proximity.
Jacob set the card on a higher branch so it would not fall, climbed down, and ran directly toward his truck. Speed mattered more than concealing his trail. He felt a sting in his shoulder but kept moving until his vision blurred and the forest tilted around him. He reached back, pulled a tiny dart from his shoulder, and collapsed unconscious without seeing who had fired it. The episode reverses the confidence of his first entry: previously, the card had opened a route into the facility; on his return, its tracking chip may have helped make him a target. The text leaves the pursuers unseen, preserving the abruptness of his capture.
Captivity and the unfinished escape
Jacob later woke in Silver Sky's custody. The facility gave him only red meat, including undercooked meat left on a tray, and he longed for broccoli. When an attendant came to deal with a problem, Jacob waited for him to leave and then reached through the cage bars to press a keycard against the reader. The lock released, but the attempt carried him only two steps into the hallway before an alarm blared and red lights flared. A guard ran through the door and leveled a gun at him. Too far away to fight and too close to flee, Jacob raised his hands; the immediate escape had failed, and he knew he needed another plan.
The sequence closes not with Jacob reaching Jaz, but with his renewed confinement and a thwarted attempt to get free. Its reversals make access a recurring source of danger: a stolen card enables the first breach, a card's hidden tracking function compromises his return, and a reader and alarm stop his later escape. Jacob's resolve survives each setback, but the facility's security turns that resolve into another opportunity to capture him.
