Le cargo
The Wild RobotLe cargo is the anonymous freighter whose catastrophic shipwreck opens the story and whose quiet return at the novel's climax threatens to undo everything Roz has built. It is the vessel that carries hundreds of brand-new ROZZUM robots across the ocean, the instrument of their dispersal and near-total destruction, and finally the agent of the Makers' claim on the one robot who has made a life for herself on the island. More than a mere setting piece, Le cargo is the story's originating catastrophe and its returning threat, the physical embodiment of the industrial world that manufactured Roz and the force that seeks to reclaim her from the wild existence she has chosen.
The Shipwreck and the Loss of the Robots
The story begins on the ocean, with wind, rain, thunder, lightning, and waves, as a hurricane rages through the night. In the midst of this chaos, Le cargo sinks, descending "down down down" to the bottom of the sea. The ship leaves hundreds of crates floating on the surface, but as the hurricane batters, whirls, and overturns them, the crates begin to sink into the depths one after another, until only five remain. These five crates drift lazily along an ocean current for days until a green spot appears on the horizon, resolving into the hard edges of a wild, rocky island. The first crate reaches the shore on a tumultuous, roaring wave and crashes against the rocks with such force that it bursts apart entirely. The same happens to the next crate, and the next, and the next, with robot limbs and torsos flung onto the ledges, a robot head splashing into a tide pool, and a robot foot sinking into the waves. Only the last crate survives, slamming against the wreckage of the first four instead of the rocks, then being lifted by waves and hurled onto a high rocky plateau, cracked and crumpled but with its robot inside safe.
The Cargo's Hidden Purpose
What the reader is not told at first is that inside each crate was a brand-new robot. Le cargo had been carrying hundreds of them before being overwhelmed by the storm, and only five robots remained, then only four, as the first robot shattered against the rocks. The cargo ship is thus revealed to be a transport vessel for TechLab Industries, carrying ROZZUM units to be sold and put to work. This hidden purpose is confirmed much later when RECO 1 explains to Roz that a year earlier, a cargo ship carrying five hundred ROZZUM units was sunk by a hurricane, and four hundred and ninety-five units were recovered from the ocean floor. The RECOs came to the island searching for the last five, having located them, and identified Roz as Unit ROZZUM 7134, property of TechLab Industries, destined to be returned to the factory, refurbished by the Makers, and sold to a work site where she would live indefinitely.
The Cargo's Return and the Threat of Reclamation
Le cargo does not merely belong to the past; it returns at a crucial moment in the story. During the wild all-night celebration that Roz and the animals hold around a towering bonfire, they are so busy singing, laughing, and dancing that they do not see the cargo ship as it passes the island. But the ship sees them. It sees the towering bonfire, it sees the robot, and then it continues quietly into the darkness. This silent observation sets the stage for the RECOs' arrival and their demand that Roz return with them to the factory. The cargo ship's reappearance is thus the turning point that transforms Roz's idyllic wild life into a confrontation with her own origins and her status as manufactured property. The ship that once brought her to the island by accident now returns as the instrument of her potential removal, and the bonfire that represents her joyful integration into the animal community becomes the very beacon that exposes her to the industrial world she left behind.
