Ratons laveurs
The Wild RobotThe Ratons laveurs are a trio of raccoons introduced as Bumpkin, Lumpkin, and Rumpkin, collectively nicknamed the Fuzzy Bandits by Mr. Beaver. They first appear when Mr. Beaver announces that his friends are arriving with materials needed to craft a new foot for Roz, the robot who lost her original foot in an accident. The three raccoons enter Roz's garden dragging behind them a tangled mess of vines, greeting the assembled company with a simple "Good day" from Bumpkin and "Hello" from Lumpkin. Their arrival marks the beginning of a collaborative effort among the forest creatures to restore the robot's mobility, and their nickname hints at their mischievous yet helpful nature.
Role in Crafting Roz's Wooden Foot
The Fuzzy Bandits' primary contribution to the foot-making project is supplying the vines that bind the wooden structure together. Mr. Beaver carves a boot-shaped wooden foot and fits it onto Roz's stump, while the raccoons' vines are used alongside tree resin to hold the pieces in place. Trunktap, a woodpecker friend of Mr. Beaver, drills holes into an old pine tree to extract thick, syrupy resin, which Mr. Beaver spreads over the wooden foot and the vines until everything is shiny and sticky. When the resin dries, Roz's foot is complete, and she walks around her garden declaring, "I'm like new!" The first attempt, however, proves unreliable: within a week, the vines come undone and the foot slips off. The group returns determined to do the job properly, finding harder wood and stronger vines, experimenting with the resin by heating it near a fire and letting it boil and thicken until it becomes an indestructible glue. They keep tinkering with their design until Roz finally has a wooden foot she can depend on, a testament to the raccoons' persistence and craftsmanship.
The Disarming of RECO 3
During the attack by the RECO robots, the Fuzzy Bandits play a pivotal role in the forest creatures' defense strategy. As a swarm of birds dive-bombs RECO 3, splattering its face with droppings and blinding its eyes, the raccoons wait hidden in the tall grass for the perfect moment. When RECO 3 drops its weapon to wipe its dirty face with both hands, the Fuzzy Bandits spring into action, snatching the rifle with their agile hands and carrying it away. Tawny and Crownpoint watch from the underbrush, and the deer lowers its head so the raccoons can carefully place the rifle onto its antlers. Then the deer and the raccoons slip into the shadows together. By the time RECO 3 realizes its weapon is gone, it is too late; the robot lets out a sad electronic tone and, still under the birds' relentless bombardment, turns and stumbles blindly backward into the mud. The theft of the rifle is a crucial step in the plan, leaving the robot defenseless and setting the stage for Broadfoot the moose to deliver the final, crushing blows that tear off RECO 3's head and end its threat permanently.
Significance in the Community
The Fuzzy Bandits embody the theme of cooperation and resourcefulness that runs through the story of Roz's integration into the island community. Though they are introduced as mischievous "bandits," their actions reveal them to be loyal and capable allies. Their willingness to drag heavy vines, refine their craftsmanship through trial and error, and risk themselves in the dangerous disarming of a RECO robot demonstrates that even the smallest and most seemingly playful creatures can make vital contributions to the survival of the group. Their partnership with Mr. Beaver, Trunktap, Tawny, and Crownpoint shows how the diverse skills of the forest animals combine to overcome challenges, from the practical problem of building a durable foot to the life-or-death struggle against the mechanical invaders. The raccoons' journey from vine-carrying helpers to cunning tacticians mirrors the broader arc of the animal community uniting around Roz, and their success in both endeavors cements their place as indispensable members of the island's defense and repair efforts.
