Trunktap

The Wild Robot

Trunktap is a woodpecker who appears in the forest community's efforts to repair Roz's damaged wooden foot. He is introduced as a friend of Mr. Beaver, who calls for his help when the raccoons known as the Fuzzy Bandits have tied vines around the robot's leg and new foot. Trunktap's role is to provide tree resin, the sticky substance needed to seal and strengthen the repair.

Identity and Introduction

Trunktap is first mentioned when Mr. Beaver, after the Fuzzy Bandits have attached vines around Roz's leg and new foot, throws back his head and calls out, "Trunktap! We could have used your help!" There is a moment of silence, followed by three rapid knocks echoing from the forest canopy. Mr. Beaver smiles and says, "Ah, that will be him." A very handsome woodpecker then dives into the garden, asking in a musical voice, "You called?" Mr. Beaver introduces him to everyone as "my buddy the pecker, Trunktap," and explains that they need tree resin, "the really sticky stuff." Trunktap responds confidently, "Of course, I can! You have a perfect pine here!"

Role in the Repair

Trunktap jumps onto an old, crispy pine tree and digs some deep holes into the bark. Thick, syrupy resin begins to flow from the trunk. Mr. Beaver then scoops up handfuls of the resin and spreads it all over the wooden foot and the vines until everything is shiny and sticky. When the resin dries shortly afterward, Roz's foot is complete. The robot walks around her garden and exclaims, "It's wonderful! I'm like new!"

The First Attempt and Its Failure

Mr. Beaver, Trunktap, and the Fuzzy Bandits leave, feeling quite satisfied with themselves. They had done a very good thing. However, this was the first wooden foot they had ever made, and within a week, the vines came undone and the foot slipped off. They returned, determined to do things properly. They found even harder wood and even stronger vines. They experimented with the resin, heating it near the fire, letting it boil and thicken, until it became an indestructible glue. They kept tinkering with their design until Roz finally had a wooden foot she could rely on.

Significance

Trunktap's contribution is essential to the repair process, as his ability to extract resin from the pine tree provides the key adhesive material. His musical voice and confident manner make him a memorable member of the forest community. The initial failure of the first repair attempt highlights the importance of persistence and experimentation, as the group's determination to improve their design ultimately results in a durable solution for Roz. Trunktap's role, while brief, demonstrates the collaborative spirit of the forest animals in helping the robot who has become part of their community.
