Guardian's Room
The Guardian's Room is the small, high-arched chamber located just inside the great gate of the Emerald City, a space that serves as the administrative and symbolic threshold between the outside world and Oz's capital. It is here that the Guardian of the Gates, a little man clothed entirely in green with a greenish tint to his skin, keeps a large green box filled with spectacles of every size and shape, all fitted with green glasses. The room itself glistens with countless emeralds set into its walls, reinforcing the city's central deception.
Function and the Spectacles Rule
The Guardian's Room is the site where Oz's most fundamental illusion is enforced. The Guardian explains to Dorothy and her companions that they must put on the spectacles before entering the city, because "if you did not wear spectacles the brightness and glory of the Emerald City would blind you." He claims that even those who live in the city must wear them night and day, and that they are all locked on, with the Guardian possessing the only key that can unlock them. He finds a pair that fits Dorothy, fastening them with two golden bands that pass around the back of her head and are locked together by a little key on a chain around his neck. He then fits spectacles for the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Lion, and even little Toto, locking each pair fast with the key. This ritual, performed in the Guardian's Room, ensures that everything the travelers see appears green, sustaining the pretense that the city is built of emeralds.
The Threshold of the City
The room also functions as the formal point of entry and exit for the Emerald City. When Dorothy and her friends first arrive, the Guardian, surprised that anyone would ask to see Oz, leads them through the room and then opens another gate with a big golden key from a peg on the wall, allowing them into the streets. Later, when they depart to seek the Wicked Witch of the West, the Guardian again meets them in this room, unlocks their spectacles, and puts them back into his great box before politely opening the gate for them. The room thus marks the boundary between the artificial, green-tinted reality of the city and the natural colors of the outside world.
Narrative Significance
The Guardian's Room is the physical mechanism through which Oz maintains his elaborate hoax. By controlling access to the spectacles, the Guardian controls perception itself, ensuring that no visitor or resident ever sees the city as it truly is. The room's small size and the Guardian's matter-of-fact explanation of the spectacles rule make the deception seem routine and unremarkable, which is precisely what makes it effective. When Dorothy and her friends return after melting the Wicked Witch of the West, the Guardian again unlocks their spectacles, and the news of the Witch's death spreads through the city, leading a crowd to follow them to the Palace. The room thus serves as both a checkpoint and a point of news dissemination, linking the travelers' adventures to the city's public life.
