Farben Kat Zet

The Zone of Interest

Farben Kat Zet is depicted through a stark conjunction: a carefully maintained camp landscape stands beside storehouses where evacuees’ possessions are sorted for use as fuel in a tannery furnace. The place’s lawns, scaffold, and assembly ground offer no refuge from that process; their apparent order makes the surrounding violence harder to separate from everyday routine.

Setting and Grounds

One view of Farben Kat Zet centers on the Appellplatz, or assembly ground, and the oak beyond a scaffold on a lawn mown in stripes. A large, sick-looking kite hangs over the tree, facing the assembly ground. The bird is described as brownish and yellowish, its color likened to the Commandant’s healing eyes; it appears to hover for hours without using its wings, perhaps through the night as well. The grounds are thus both meticulously tended and shadowed by an image of sickness and suspended motion.

Storehouses and the Disposal of Belongings

The camp’s tannery has attached storehouses in which the cheapest odds and ends belonging to evacuees are stacked before being eliminated as fuel in the tannery furnace. The account makes this process tangible through discarded cardboard shoes, plastic handbags, and slabby wooden prams. These are not simply abandoned possessions: their collection and conversion into furnace fuel reveal a system that extends destruction to the material traces of the people being deported.

Landscape and Narrative Contrast

The place’s orderly surfaces sit beside this practical handling of the dead and their belongings. The striped lawn and the bird’s motionless presence create a composed view, while the storehouse inventory exposes what that composition cannot conceal. In the surrounding account, the approach of winter 1943 prompts a confident retrospective assessment of the Nazi war effort. Read against that certainty, Farben Kat Zet’s landscape holds together cultivated order and organized destruction, making the camp’s violence part of the same world as its routines and displays of control.
