the camp's Bunker 11

The Zone of Interest

The camp's Bunker 11 is marked in the narrative by two stark associations: the Gestapo and the postwar execution of Paul Doll. Though the book offers little description of the structure itself, its appearances place it at the junction between the camp’s coercive authority and the reckoning that followed the war.

Setting and Identification

The camp's Bunker 11 appears in a brief passage as the route to an office: Fritz Mobius and Doll walk past clerks bent over their desks, and the location is identified with the Gestapo. The detail is spare, almost like a label encountered in passing. Rather than describing the bunker’s design or activities, the scene situates it within the camp’s administrative landscape, where offices and the machinery of political policing occupy the same daily world.

The Gestapo Association

The identification gives the location an institutional significance without specifying what took place inside it. The surrounding scene is ordinary in its surface details—clerks at work, Mobius and Doll on their way to an office—yet the Gestapo association makes coercive power part of that routine setting. The passage does not establish that the bunker served as a particular interrogation or execution site during the camp’s operation; its significance here rests on the direct association the narrative provides.

Doll’s Execution

The camp's Bunker 11 returns in the account of Doll’s fate as the place outside which he was hanged. After being demoted to a clerical post in Berlin in June 1943, he was reinstated as commandant in May 1944. Captured in March 1946, tried at Nuremberg, and delivered to the Polish authorities, he was executed at Kat Zet I on April 16, 1947.

In his final statement, Doll wrote, “In the solitude of my cell I have come to the bitter realisation that I have sinned gravely against humanity.” The execution outside the camp's Bunker 11 makes the location the endpoint of his personal trajectory: the former commandant who exercised authority within the camp was put to death there after the war. The text records this reversal but supplies no further account of the place or the execution itself.
