Hidden box beneath the dolmen

Three Bags Full

The Hidden box beneath the dolmen is the concealed store Rebecca discovers after following a lamb’s cries. Its contents connect George’s secret journeys with the sheep’s past, and the moment Rebecca opens it brings an unknown human purpose into view through objects the flock has carried without understanding.

Location and Access

The box lies beneath the dolmen. Before Rebecca finds it, Heather confirms that Rebecca already has a key, while Melmoth insists that George’s red lamb needs all the keys. Cloud clarifies that they mean the key for the box under the dolmen; Zora proudly says she has it. The passage then shows Rebecca finding a key on a string on the steps of George’s shepherd’s caravan. It glitters like spilled blood in the low sun. She puts it in her pocket without stopping to wonder about it, then follows the sound of a crying lamb under the dolmen.

The flock watches as Rebecca reaches the hidden box. Othello has scraped away earth to make it easier for her to find. Rebecca laughs and uses the key to open it, turning the sheep’s preparation into a practical invitation: the cache is no longer only something they know about, but something a human can uncover and handle.

Contents and Discovery

As Rebecca kneels to take a small packet from the box, a smell rises from the nape of her neck. She bites through its string; plastic crackles, and something dry crumbles in her fingers. Rebecca identifies it aloud as grass. The sheep sniff the material too, finding its smell strange but appetizing, and Mopple the Whale immediately recognizes that it can be eaten.

The first packet makes the flock understand what George had hidden in plain sight. Each sheep had carried a small packet tied beneath its belly and buried deep in its fleece when George drove them to another pasture for a few weeks. He had called these trips Operation Polyphemus, while the packets had seemed to smell of nothing. The box therefore gives the sheep a new way to interpret a repeated part of their own history: the concealed parcels they transported were the same kind of grass humans were seeking.

The Cache’s Consequences

Rebecca does not share the packet with the sheep. Instead, she holds out her skirt like a red bag and gathers everything she can find beneath the dolmen: many small packets, a larger square package, and a file of papers. She carries the whole cache back to George’s shepherd’s caravan, heavily laden, and remains out of sight for a while.

When Rebecca reappears on the steps, a glowing point is in front of her lips. Sweet, heavy smoke drifts across the meadow and makes the sheep sleepy; Rebecca, by contrast, becomes suddenly talkative. The box’s contents thus move from concealed evidence to an immediate change in the scene. Its packets explain the sheep’s former journeys, while the additional package and file show that what Rebecca has uncovered extends beyond the material the flock can identify.
