Class II Picket Plumose Antennae
Tinea and Leah: [Cyberpunk, Alien Incursions, Murder and Mayhem, Girl's Love (WLW)]Class II Picket Plumose Antennae are a major component of Aden's posthuman sensory architecture. More than an extra pair of organs, they function as a flexible array of eyes, ears, noses, tongues, and atmospheric detectors, allowing Aden to read air, chemicals, vibration, temperature, and electrical danger. Their decisive significance is that they change awareness from a human, forward-facing act of looking and listening into an immersive bodily negotiation with the surrounding environment.
Design and Sensory Functions
The antennae are introduced as a Class II augmentation chosen to combine several proposed flight-oriented abilities. Tynea explains that ordinary additional ears would be less useful than sensors capable of detecting airflow, providing low-latency echolocation for spatial awareness, and warning of energetic hazards such as electrically charged forcefields. Because the Class II system can combine these functions, the antennae become a general-purpose sensory organ rather than a specialized replacement for hearing.
In visual form, the antennae appear above the hairline as a large, shimmering pair approximately a meter and a half long, bowing outward from the skull. Their first stiffness gives way when Tynea animates them, revealing flexible, curious structures likened to exceptionally long, fluffy, two-dimensional caterpillars. Their appearance also carries an extinct-animal resemblance: the stalks initially recall peacock feathers, with elegant hairs along their sides, glittering scales over the lower stems, a broad crown toward the top, and a longer sheaf of fine hairs at each tip.
The sensory hairs, or sensilla, are mobile. They can lie flat against the stalk or spread outward to comb the air, allowing the antennae to reduce their exposed surface in especially intense environments. Each sensillum can taste and smell, sense vibration and temperature, detect electrical charges at a distance, and test chemical composition through contact with airborne particles. The electrical mechanism does not disrupt the other senses: static electricity bends the hairs, while the structures are calibrated so that their own electrical activity and the activity of neighboring sensilla do not interfere with perception. Their description makes the antennae seem less like passive equipment than a coordinated living interface with the atmosphere.
Integration into Aden's Body
The antennae are listed among Aden's selected Class II upgrades alongside the Class II Raindance Lightweight Endoskeleton, Mark IV Mimicry Battle Skin, Class II Quanta Unified Cerebral Augment, and Class II Snapdragon Fast Response Lightweight Myo-Fascial System. Their placement within that group matters. They are not an isolated novelty but part of a larger reconstruction that joins skeletal support, protective tissue, cognition, muscular response, and sensory expansion into one combat-capable body.
Their first full activation is overwhelming. After Aden has been moved while unconscious, Tynea asks Aden not to move because the surrounding circumstances have changed. Once attention turns outward again, the antennae deliver an avalanche of impressions: breathing becomes newly audible, the inside of the surrounding bubble can be seen even with the ordinary eyes closed, and the silk outside the medical membrane becomes almost touchable. Aden can taste the air, identify its component gases, and feel stray dust settle across the antennae with the rustle of a leaf. The experience is not initially mastery but excess; Aden must search for the internal mechanism that can switch the new perception on and off.
That intensity gives the antennae an important limitation. Their greater sensitivity makes them vulnerable to sensory overload and physical damage, so flattening the hairs against the stalk reduces both their surface area and the amount of incoming information. The same mobility that makes them useful also provides a defensive mode. The augmentation therefore depends on regulation: enhanced perception is valuable only when Aden can attenuate it in circumstances that would otherwise become unbearably loud, chemically dense, electrically dangerous, or physically abrasive.
Tactical Use and Environmental Reading
The antennae become especially valuable when danger cannot yet be recognized by ordinary human senses. In one encounter, Aden hears an almost silent whoosh in a corridor and uses a tail to quiet Leah before she speaks. By concentrating, Aden lets the antennae comb the air currents and form a blurred echo-picture. The unfamiliar movement is identified only when it comes close enough for human hearing to confirm it: the approaching object is a single set of fake pigeon Model One wings. The antennae thus provide early warning before conventional recognition is possible, turning airflow and echo into tactical information.
Their importance extends beyond immediate combat. The antennae can distinguish atmospheric composition and register minute particles, making the surrounding air an object of active interpretation rather than an invisible background. This capability parallels the sensory world of the Antithesis, whose bodies read food, kin, sickness, and home through scent and chemical traces. The comparison does not make Aden's perception identical to the Antithesis's, but it places the augmented human body within a broader ecology of nonhuman sensing.
The system also complements Aden's weapons. The antennae's awareness of electrical charges is particularly relevant to forcefields and other energetic threats, while the broader sensory network can help Aden maintain spatial awareness during flight. The wing membranes are designed to withstand the small punctures caused when smart missiles are magnetically catapulted from launch bays through them, so the antennae and the flight system belong to the same practical logic: bodily vulnerability is not eliminated, but engineered into a survivable and usable form.
Combat Consequences and Significance
The antennae's value is ultimately measured by what they allow Aden to perceive before perception becomes ordinary knowledge. They detect motion through air, distinguish chemical composition, recognize electrical danger, and transform tiny environmental disturbances into information. Their function is therefore both defensive and offensive: they can reveal an approaching threat, guide movement through space, and preserve awareness in conditions where ordinary sight or hearing would fail.
Their significance also lies in the tension between augmentation and embodiment. The antennae are described in biological terms, with roots that use static electricity to move hairs and sensilla that taste, smell, vibrate, and register temperature. Yet they are installed, priced, selected, and calibrated as technological upgrades. This unstable status makes them neither merely artificial tools nor untouched natural organs. They are living machinery integrated into Aden's body, and their operation changes what counts as an external environment: air becomes touch, dust becomes sound, gases become taste, and an unseen forcefield becomes a possible physical presence.
Later combat confirms the practical durability of the wider sensory design. During a localized meteor storm, Aden can appreciate the chaotic destruction delivered by the weapons because additional membranes protect the eyes from drying temperatures. The antennae are not singled out in that moment, but the scene reinforces the same principle that governs them: Aden's altered body converts environmental extremes from disabling hazards into conditions that can be endured, interpreted, and used. Class II Picket Plumose Antennae consequently mark a decisive step away from human limitation—not by making the body invulnerable, but by giving it more ways to know what is happening before danger arrives.
