Myriad

Tinea and Leah: [Cyberpunk, Alien Incursions, Murder and Mayhem, Girl's Love (WLW)]

Myriad is a compact wearable weapons system whose importance lies in the fusion of firepower and manufacture: it launches hundreds of miniature missiles, rebuilds its ammunition from raw materials, and can operate through configurable autonomous battle routines. In practice, it is not merely a launcher but a mobile arsenal and production system, one that makes Vanguard combat capability depend less on carrying a fixed supply of weapons than on integrating machinery, catalogs, materials, and bodily augmentation.

Design and Capabilities

Myriad is unlocked through the Class I Minor Dimensional Shunting catalog, the Class I Matter Recombination catalog, and the Class I Esoteric Missile Systems catalog, at a cost of nearly five hundred points. The device is worn around the hips and can launch hundreds of miniature missiles per minute, while rebuilding a full complement over five minutes when supplied with the necessary materials. Its compactness is emphasized by comparison with power armor: it remains one of the larger pieces of equipment that can be worn without becoming a full armored suit, but its size is still small relative to its output.

The system's defining advantage is that it manufactures ammunition rather than merely storing it. The missiles can carry variable payloads based on catalogs already possessed by the user, and Myriad can craft those variants from raw materials. Each version requires its own blueprint, but the prototype begins with three basic designs: the micro-missile itself, a nanite payload intended for corpse disposal, and a high-explosive load. This arrangement makes the weapon economical over time, since access to materials and production capability can replace repeated purchases of finished ammunition.

Integration with Vanguard Equipment

The system appears as a series of sturdy covers along the upper thighs and hips, close to where the user's hands naturally fall. Behind them are round resource sockets, some already occupied by plug-tanks. Different sockets are illuminated and labeled for gasses, liquids, and solids, turning the wearer's lower body into an organized interface between biological movement and industrial supply. The physical arrangement also makes Myriad conspicuous: it is powerful because it is built into the body-adjacent equipment layout, but its panels can become intrusive enough to poke the wearer until they split open and free the legs.

Its interface divides the weapon's functions into distinct operational panels. A battle panel reports sensors and available missiles and includes an autonomous battle mode that detects and eliminates threats according to tens of thousands of configurable settings. Tynea is already adjusting those settings when the system is introduced, extending the weapon's intelligence beyond the user's immediate attention. A second panel handles manufacture, displaying materials and their levels. With the materials then available, Myriad could produce roughly a thousand high-explosive mini-missiles but only ten nanite missiles, making the difference between raw-material supply and tactical abundance explicit.

Demonstrated Use in Combat

The first practical demonstration begins with a scraggly surviving tree selected as a target for a high-explosive missile. A small sound announces the launch; a silver blur shoots from the right thigh, ignites a short distance away, tears through the air, and detonates with enough force to split the trunk down the middle. The result corrects the expectation that the weapons might be weak like the Hummingbird micro-missiles. Their individual payloads do not quite equal that of a small bomb, but they carry substantially more throw-weight than the user's sidearm, and volleys can compensate when one missile is insufficient.

Myriad later becomes part of the visual language of Tinea's combat style. Leah watches Tinea spin through the air, destroying a dozen Antithesis with a double-bladed spear while Myriad launches rockets in repeated tubes like a human gatling gun. The weapon does not replace close combat; it amplifies the speed, spectacle, and destructive excess of a body already moving through the battlefield with extraordinary agility. Its ammunition production gives that spectacle endurance, allowing the attack to continue as a stream rather than a single expenditure.

At a later climax, Myriad empties its last reserves by sending two hundred rockets fifty meters into the sky. The moment reverses its usual promise of regeneration: the machine is normally defined by replenishment, yet here its finite stock is deliberately exhausted in a concentrated act of force. The last volley therefore shows both sides of the system's logic. Myriad makes sustained fire possible, but it still depends on materials, production time, and the tactical decision to spend everything at once.

Narrative Function and Consequences

Myriad turns the point economy into a physical combat ecology. Its acquisition requires a substantial investment, but its ability to manufacture ammunition promises savings afterward, provided the user has blueprints, raw materials, and a means of production. The weapon consequently links catalog knowledge to bodily survival: technological power is not simply bought and carried but assembled, monitored, replenished, and administrated through the Vanguard's augmented body and its artificial assistants.

The system also marks the widening distance between ordinary human embodiment and Vanguard capability. As the characters recognize that Vanguard become less human as they grow stronger because the human body cannot meet the demands of their power, Myriad offers a concrete image of that transformation. It places industrial storage, resource classification, autonomous decision-making, and missile production around the hips and thighs, making the body a platform for a weapons network. Yet the device remains entangled with ordinary physical experience: it can free the legs when its panels obstruct movement, and after battle it is still noticed as an uncomfortable object pressing into the wearer's body while Leah and Tinea recover together.

That tension gives Myriad more than a purely technical role. It is both an efficient battlefield instrument and a material reminder that enhanced life is lived through equipment that can intrude, assist, manufacture, and kill. Its most decisive significance is therefore systemic: Myriad does not merely add missiles to a character's arsenal. It converts the character into a mobile weapons-and-production assemblage, making the expansion of combat power inseparable from the reorganization of the body around machines.
