The 150mm Towed Cannon
Tinea and Leah: [Cyberpunk, Alien Incursions, Murder and Mayhem, Girl's Love (WLW)]The 150mm Towed Cannon is Leah's most conspicuous piece of improvised heavy firepower, a small-wheeled anti-tank gun whose fifteen-centimeter bore gives it destructive force far beyond its apparently light construction. It becomes significant not merely because it kills heavily armored Antithesis, but because its material demands repeatedly reshape the battlefield: Leah must position it, brace it, reload it, and eventually solve the problem of moving a weapon that its operator cannot physically push.
Design and Battlefield Role
The cannon is an old wheeled anti-tank weapon from before the 2000s. Its construction is as lightweight as possible, yet its caliber is enormous: 150 millimeters, or fifteen centimeters, large enough for Leah to fit both fists inside the barrel side by side. Mounted on a tiny wheelbase, it looks dangerously top-heavy, a visual contradiction between portability and overwhelming stopping power. Its tactical value lies precisely in that contradiction. Leah does not need armor for the immediate engagement; she needs enough force to halt an armored enemy, and the cannon supplies it.
Leah places the weapon beside her open pod, whose turrets are raised and pointed outward while the pod remains ready as an escape route. The arrangement turns the cannon into one element of a layered defensive position rather than a substitute for protection. The pod provides mobility and refuge; the cannon provides the single massive blow that the pod's lighter weapons cannot match.
Destruction of the Fourteen
The cannon's decisive use comes against the remaining Antithesis Model Fourteen and its passengers. As the Fourteen's front slides across Leah's sights, its momentum lifts one side and its legs struggle for traction. Leah gently presses the butterfly trigger. The shell's impact is described as a 150mm round driving its nose fuze into the facial armor of an alien monster; detonation and muzzle blast arrive together, producing the explosive destruction of the remaining Fourteen and everyone aboard it.
The shot also demonstrates the cost of the weapon's power. Leah's veil thickens into solidity and turns the blastwave's kinetic energy back against itself, while the cannon wobbles on its wheels. The gun's success is therefore not clean or frictionless. Its destructive capacity changes the engagement from an armored threat into a dead one, but the recoil immediately makes the weapon itself unstable and demands that Leah manage its physical consequences.
Anchoring, Reloading, and Material Resistance
After firing, the cannon's anchoring mechanism becomes a problem in its own right. Leah attacks the joint holding one of its plows, steel-thorned plates designed to dig into the floor and hold the overgunned wheelbase against recoil. The plows are effective enough that removing them from the ground requires nearly all of Leah's strength when pulling with the grain. Her anger at the weapon's supposedly precise construction arises from a practical failure: a mechanism built to remain fixed during firing is now refusing to release when the battlefield requires movement.
The cannon later carries two magazines and can fire a loaded canister as a dense cloud of pellets. When a pursuing group of Antithesis closes to within meters, Leah receives notice that the cannon has finished reloading both magazines. She whips the pod around until the muzzle faces the aliens, braces with the pod leaning forward to cushion the recoil, and fires before the attackers can adjust. The weapon belches a concentrated storm of lead that cuts a cone through the entire gathering. In this use, the cannon is not simply an anti-armor instrument: its ammunition and reload cycle allow it to deliver a devastating close-range area attack as well.
Transport and the Limits of Portability
The cannon's light construction does not make it genuinely easy to move. Leah unlocks its legs and folds them into a hitch so the gun can be towed. There is no tow truck, and she considers whether the egg might be strong enough to move it. When she pushes against the cannon, however, she moves herself instead of the weapon. The failed attempt exposes the difference between technical portability and practical mobility: the gun can be folded for towing, but the available operator is too light to shift it by hand.
Its passage leaves a permanent mark on the terrain. The cannon's six legs cut deep, meter-wide furrows into the ground, where rainwater and mud collect. Leah marks the ruts on her map so that she will not stumble into them accidentally, although she expects her four-legged egg to cross them without much difficulty. The cannon thus remains present even when it is not firing, inscribing its weight and movement into the landscape.
Narrative and Material Significance
The 150mm Towed Cannon embodies the book's recurring tension between advanced battlefield capability and stubborn physical reality. Leah can make a single shot destroy an Antithesis Model Fourteen, yet she must still wrestle with a steel anchoring joint, absorb the weapon's recoil, wait for its magazines to reload, and confront the fact that she cannot push it. Its power is never abstract. Every advantage arrives attached to mass, blast, recoil, traction, ammunition, or terrain.
The cannon also gives Leah a form of agency distinct from passive protection. The open pod keeps an escape route available, but the gun lets her choose stopping power over armor when the immediate threat demands it. Its material agency repeatedly alters her choices: the wheelbase wobbles after victory, the plows resist disengagement, the folded legs define how it can be transported, and the furrows remain as evidence of its passage. The weapon is therefore both Leah's tool and an active constraint within the combat assemblage, converting tactical decisions into bodily labor and reshaping the ground around her.
