A Theory of Causes

The Story Before the Murder
A pattern of convergence
Mr. Treves argues that a murder story begins long before the killing, with separate lives gradually converging on one place and moment.
He recalls how trivial choices can determine who becomes a witness and what evidence reaches a courtroom. The idea makes coincidence feel like part of a larger design.
Zero Hour
His image of many people moving toward zero supplies the novel’s governing structure. The eventual crime is an ending shaped by earlier decisions, not an isolated beginning.
The September Gathering

A Deliberate Reunion
Two wives under one roof
Nevile Strange proposes bringing Kay and Audrey together at Gull’s Point, presenting the arrangement as modern, sensible, and his own idea.
Lady Tressilian distrusts the plan, but Audrey says she wants the meeting. Her calm agreement conceals a powerful unease that others cannot explain.
A gathering assembled
Mary Aldin and Thomas Royde notice the tension once the party arrives. The reunion becomes the setting where private histories and an unseen design can meet.
The Framing of Nevile

A False Trail
Evidence made to point one way
After an argument with Lady Tressilian, Nevile leaves Gull’s Point. The murder scene later yields his fingerprints on a golf club and blood on his suit.
Those facts appear to link motive, opportunity, and weapon. The apparent case is so complete that the police consider arresting him.
Doubt in the pattern
Superintendent Battle sees a mismatch between the deliberate precautions and the supposed impulsive attack. The obvious evidence may be a constructed trail, and the case turns on testing what it seems to prove.
The Second Accusation

A New Suspect
The evidence changes direction
Once Nevile is cleared, clues point toward Audrey: a bloodied glove, a left-handed blow, hair and powder on Nevile’s coat, and a modified racket.
Her reserved manner and near-acceptance of arrest appear to reinforce the case. The police have to separate physical evidence from what a suspect’s behaviour seems to mean.
A frame within a frame
Battle recognizes that the clues against Audrey could also have been planted. The second trail is not a fresh solution but a further layer in the design against her.
The Actual Zero Hour

The Convergence Revealed
A witness completes the pattern
MacWhirter’s account of a rope leading from Gull’s Point gives Battle a way to reconstruct the murder route. He tests the remaining suspect by throwing Ted Latimer into the water.
The failed swimmer is eliminated; the capable athlete remains. Battle confronts Nevile with a plan that depended on swimming, climbing, and returning unseen.
Confession and exposure
Nevile’s carefully maintained sportsman’s mask breaks when Battle challenges his motive and childhood history. The converging threads expose his real target: Audrey, whom he intended to have executed.
