A Closed House

The Scene of Death
An apparent inside crime
Lady Tressilian is found dead in her bedroom, while Barrett lies unconscious from drugs. The doors and windows appear secure, and the household becomes the first field of inquiry.
A bloodied golf club seems to offer an immediate explanation. The crime also appears to require knowledge of the household’s routines.
Initial uncertainties
Dr. Lazenby cannot confirm that the club caused the fatal injury. The sleeping maid, the bell, and the strange circumstances around the weapon leave Battle wary of a solution that looks too easy.
The Household Questioned

Suspects in the House
Motives and movements
Battle and Inspector Leach question the household, considering the inheritance, the quarrel, and everyone’s opportunity. Their method treats each person as a potential suspect.
Nevile admits that he argued with Lady Tressilian and left for Easterhead Bay. Hurstall remembers his late return, while the other residents supply their own accounts.
A suspect emerges
Blood on Nevile’s clothes and his fingerprints on the apparent weapon sharpen the case against him. The officers nevertheless investigate the contradictions rather than stopping at the first explanation.
The False Weapon

The Niblick’s Problem
Contradictory evidence
Battle questions how Nevile could have left clear fingerprints on a club supposedly used in a forceful blow. A person handling it to strike should have disturbed those marks.
The evidence seems to combine premeditation with a quarrel-driven impulse. Those two accounts do not fit comfortably together.
A staged appearance
Battle concludes that the club may have been placed beside the body to direct suspicion. He temporarily allows the evidence to keep pointing toward Nevile while searching for the actual weapon and the person who arranged the scene.
The Audacious Theory

A Crime of Hatred
Motive beyond money
The inheritance creates possible motives for several people, but Nevile’s finances prove healthy. Battle suspects that the crime may arise from an obsession rather than financial need.
Mary recounts Mr. Treves’s story of a child who may have committed a carefully planned murder. The tale suggests that a past act can remain hidden inside an apparently ordinary adult.
Clues reconsidered
Battle searches for physical details that could identify the child. He also notices a cleaned fender knob and an apparent rope route, signs that the true attack may have used an improvised weapon.
The Evidence Reversed

An Unstable Case
Audrey accused
Battle arrests Audrey after finding clues that seem to show she attacked Lady Tressilian. Nevile rejects the accusation, but the evidence and Audrey’s own words appear to confirm it.
Thomas Royde reveals that Audrey had once left Nevile for Adrian. That fact removes the revenge motive Battle had assigned her, but motive alone cannot overturn the physical trail.
The decisive interruption
MacWhirter arrives with information that shifts the inquiry from interpretation to reconstruction. Battle’s experiment on the launch forces the actual murderer to respond, and Nevile confesses.
