The Perfect Sportsman

A Winning Public Image
Success and composure
Nevile is admired as a handsome, wealthy athlete who accepts defeat graciously. His good-sportsman manner makes him appear unusually stable and generous.
Others mistake outward control for inner harmlessness. His identity depends on being seen as a man who can master disappointment.
A vulnerable pride
Later revelations recast his composure as a role that protects a brittle sense of entitlement. The image of effortless success becomes part of the concealment.
Audrey Leaves

The Injury Beneath the Mask
A hidden departure
Audrey becomes frightened of Nevile and leaves him for Adrian Royde. Nevile conceals the true reason for their separation by accepting public blame and arranging the divorce.
His apparent generosity masks the wound to his pride. Audrey’s departure, rather than any financial loss, becomes the grievance around which his private life organizes itself.
A grievance preserved
He later maintains the public story that he left Audrey. That fiction lets him appear in control while his resentment deepens unseen.
The Reunion Trap

Invitation as a Snare
A manufactured choice
Nevile persuades Audrey to accept a visit alongside Kay and presents the arrangement as his own idea. His insistence helps prevent others from recognizing the invitation as a trap.
Audrey agrees partly because she feels unable to refuse his past kindness. Her gratitude and fear make the meeting possible without revealing his purpose.
The trap takes shape
The gathering gives Nevile access to the household, a known quarrel, and a believable route to blame. A social reconciliation is turned into cover for violence.
A Murder Made to Look Simple

A Planned Accusation
An improvised route
Nevile prepares the modified racket and uses a rope to move between Gull’s Point and the opposite shore. He exploits his athletic abilities to attack Lady Tressilian and return without relying on the ferry.
He plants misleading evidence against himself, expecting the case to be solved and then dismissed as an obvious frame-up. That apparent exoneration is meant to make a second accusation more persuasive.
The true intended victim
The old woman’s death is instrumental. Nevile’s real aim is to make Audrey appear guilty and send her to the gallows.
The Mask Falls

Confession at Stark Head
A deliberate provocation
Battle exposes the physical route and eliminates Ted Latimer by testing whether he can swim. He then turns the accusation back on Nevile, who can no longer rely on a polished public image.
The investigation’s controlled pressure makes Nevile believe his plan has failed and Audrey may escape. His pride and hatred overwhelm his remaining self-command.
The childhood pattern returns
Nevile admits that he planned the scheme and wanted Audrey to die afraid. Battle connects the adult crime to the suspected bow-and-arrow killing of a child, revealing a long-standing punitive obsession.
