A House Waiting for Morning

Night Ends Uneasily
A divided household
After the quarrel with Lady Tressilian, Nevile goes to Easterhead Bay while Kay remains behind. Audrey, Mary, and the other residents retire without knowing the murder plan is already in motion.
The house appears quiet, but its routines have been manipulated. The apparent calm hides a sequence of staged movements and missing safeguards.
A false return
Nevile later comes back by car with Ted Latimer, presenting a normal late-night arrival. The house’s locked doors and sleeping occupants help make the return seem unremarkable.
The Body and the Accusation

The Household Breaks
A discovery in Lady Tressilian’s room
Alice finds Lady Tressilian dead and Barrett unconscious. Hurstall alerts the others, and the house becomes the centre of a police inquiry.
Nevile, Kay, Audrey, Mary, and Thomas are forced to confront the possibility that the murderer is among them.
A suspect is chosen
The fingerprints and blood appear to point to Nevile. His private argument and supposed inheritance motive make the accusation difficult to resist.
The House After Nevile Is Cleared

Relief with No Resolution
A case turns away from him
Barrett’s account of seeing Nevile leave while Lady Tressilian was still alive changes the investigation. Battle also finds that the alleged golf club was not the true weapon.
Nevile is spared immediate arrest, but the household remains under suspicion. Mary and Thomas cannot explain the growing sense that a more dangerous person is still present.
Uncertainty deepens
The clearing of one suspect does not restore domestic trust. It clears the way for a second accusation and a more frightening understanding of the plan.
Audrey Leaves Under Arrest

A Departure That Looks Like Defeat
The warrant served
Battle tells Audrey she is under arrest for Lady Tressilian’s murder. Audrey accepts the charge with a calmness that appears to confirm the evidence against her.
Nevile reaches toward her, but she tells him she does not mind. Thomas stands near the door as if he could keep her from leaving, yet cannot stop the officers.
Safety concealed in the scene
Audrey believes the ordeal with Nevile is over and feels safer with the police. Battle has arranged the arrest partly to protect her from the murderer while preparing his final test.
The House Empties

Lives Move Beyond the Crime
Nevile’s plan ends
Battle’s launch experiment exposes Nevile, and his confession removes the threat of Audrey’s execution. Gull’s Point is no longer a sealed world in which his private story controls everyone.
Audrey leaves the house alive, while MacWhirter prepares to sail for Chile. Their decision to marry gives the investigation’s survivor a future outside the old household.
The gathering disperses
The guests’ paths separate again, but not as they arrived. Audrey’s understanding of her past has changed, Thomas’s loyalties have shifted, and Mary’s life seems less fixed.
