An Outsider’s Arrival

No Connection to the Family
A separate visitor
MacWhirter comes to the resort for a few quiet days before leaving for South America. He knows nothing of the family history at Gull’s Point and has no stake in the inheritance.
His outsider status keeps him clear of the household’s romantic loyalties and assumptions. He is not initially interested in the murder story circulating at the hotel.
A view from across the water
The distance between hotel and house gives him a different perspective on the events. His role begins outside the social circle that dominates the investigation.
A Visitor at Stark Head

The Unplanned Witness
A private walk
MacWhirter returns to the cliff where he once tried to die. His purpose is to examine his own recovery, not to watch Gull’s Point or seek evidence.
From the rocks he can see the house and the surrounding shore. The landscape later helps him reason about the possible route between the two sides of the river.
The rescue changes his role
He encounters Audrey in crisis and becomes involved in a case from which he had been entirely separate. His compassion creates a reason to look more closely at what happened.
The Cleaner’s Parcel

A Clue Falls Outside the House
A mistake beyond police control
A cleaner gives MacWhirter the wrong suit, bearing a stain and smell from the shore rocks. The accident delivers a trace from the murder route to someone who is not a suspect in the household.
MacWhirter connects the odour to the dead fish that Don rolled in. His observational ability turns the mistake into a reason to investigate further.
A new chain of evidence
The clue points toward an evening change of clothes near the water. It gives Battle an independent lead beyond the planted evidence inside Gull’s Point.
The Statement at Gull’s Point

The Outsider Speaks
A last-minute arrival
MacWhirter arrives at Gull’s Point and asks to speak privately with Battle. He explains the supposed rope sighting and the circumstances of his earlier failed suicide attempt.
His statement arrives as Audrey is about to be treated as the murderer. The interruption gives Battle a reason to pause before allowing the case to close.
An experiment becomes possible
Battle uses the account to test who could swim across the river. MacWhirter’s role is not to solve the case alone but to provide the leverage that makes the final confrontation possible.
The Outsider Leaves Changed

A Witness Becomes Family
The case is no longer his
Nevile’s confession confirms the danger MacWhirter perceived and removes the immediate threat to Audrey. The police no longer need him to carry his fabricated eyewitness story into court.
He returns to his packing and prepares to leave the country, as planned.
A different departure
Audrey asks to travel with him and marry him. The man who arrived as an indifferent outsider leaves connected to the people and events he once intended to avoid.
