Zero as a Destination

Causes Move Toward One Point
The metaphor introduced
Mr. Treves imagines many people converging on a specific time and place, eventually passing over the top into a zero hour. The image makes a murder the culmination of earlier lives.
The metaphor carries both narrative and emotional force: each decision appears to draw the characters nearer to an event none can yet see.
A point of danger
Zero initially suggests a fixed destination and the end of possibility. The later story will complicate whether that moment must result in death.
The Planned Zero

A Date in September
A plan takes shape
Nevile’s plan is designed around a September gathering, when Audrey, Kay, and the old household will be together. The date provides the conditions for a murder and a legal frame-up.
He intends to bring the separate histories to a point at which Audrey will be condemned. For him, zero is the moment his revenge becomes irreversible.
Control has limits
The plan is detailed but depends on how other people and chance will behave. Its apparent precision cannot prevent the arrival of events Nevile did not predict.
A Second Zero for Audrey

The End She Fears
Waiting ends in accusation
Audrey believes the danger she has sensed has finally arrived when Battle arrests her. The moment seems to confirm that she will be hanged, yet she feels relief because she is away from Nevile.
For her, the apparent zero is both an ending and a release from helpless waiting.
A moment still open
The police have not yet completed the investigation. MacWhirter’s arrival and Battle’s experiment leave room for another outcome after the point that seemed final.
The Launch at Stark Head

Zero Hour Reframed
A convergence in one boat
Battle brings the household together beneath Stark Head and explains how their separate stories led to the murder. The scene gathers the suspects, the investigator, and the outsider whose evidence changed the case.
His experiment turns the launch into a stage where the last hidden movement can be tested.
Death interrupted
Nevile is exposed before Audrey can be executed. Zero becomes the moment of truth and intervention rather than the completed death the planner intended.
The Journey Beyond Zero

Departure After Convergence
Paths separate again
After the confession, the group no longer needs to remain bound by suspicion and a shared house. Audrey chooses to leave with MacWhirter, while the others begin confronting futures shaped by the truth.
The story’s central convergence has ended, but its characters are not returned to their old positions.
A new beginning
MacWhirter’s planned voyage and Audrey’s choice turn the final movement toward travel and marriage. The zero hour that nearly ended her life becomes a point from which a different life can begin.
