Adrian Royde
Towards ZeroAdrian Royde is known chiefly through what others recall about him: he was Thomas Royde’s brother, Audrey Strange’s lover, and the man who died in a car accident after Audrey left Nevile Strange for him. Though he remains offstage in the evidence, his relationship and death complicate the apparent motives in the investigation of Lady Tressilian’s murder.
Identity and Death
Thomas Royde identifies Adrian as his brother and says that Adrian was killed in a car accident. The available account gives no further detail about Adrian’s life or the circumstances of the accident. His place in the story is therefore defined less by direct action than by the consequences his absence leaves behind.
Relationship with Audrey and Nevile
Thomas corrects the police’s understanding of the earlier marriage: Audrey, not Nevile, left the marriage, running away with Adrian. Thomas presents Nevile’s later conduct as chivalrous; Nevile arranged for Audrey to divorce him and accepted the blame. He had also tried to persuade her to accept an allowance, which she refused. In Thomas’s account, Audrey had reason to feel grateful to Nevile rather than to hate him, and this history helps explain why she agreed to meet Kay Strange.
Death and Its Aftermath
Audrey recalls going to meet Adrian, only for him not to arrive; he was killed, and she felt that Nevile had somehow managed it. Her suspicion is presented as her feeling, not as proof that Nevile caused Adrian’s death. Thomas’s correction of the police account separates the established history of Audrey’s relationship with Adrian from the suspicion Audrey associated with the loss. Adrian’s death thus remains a painful absence in her past and a source of misleading inference about her motives.
