The Attack and the Creature

Captain Nemo informs Professor Aronnax that the ship's propeller has become entangled in the horn-covered mandibles of a giant squid. The creature that confronts them is a monster of terrifying dimensions, fully eight meters long, with enormous, staring sea-green eyes and eight writhing arms, each lined with 250 semispheric suckers. Its mouth is a beak made of horn, shaped like a parrot's, opening and closing vertically, and its tongue is armed with several rows of sharp teeth. The unstable color of its spindle-shaped body shifts from bluish gray to reddish brown as it grows irritated.
