Electric Gun

The electric gun is the standard hunting and defensive weapon aboard the Nautilus, a technological marvel that replaces all gunpowder-based firearms. Captain Nemo designed it to function in the submarine's isolated, self-sufficient world, where traditional materials like saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal are unavailable. The weapon fires not ordinary bullets but small glass capsules invented by the Austrian chemist Leniebroek, each covered with a strip of steel and weighted with a lead base. These capsules are genuine little Leyden jars charged with high-voltage electricity; they detonate at the slightest impact, killing any animal, no matter how strong, as if struck by lightning. The capsules are no bigger than number 4 shot, and the chamber of an ordinary rifle can hold ten of them. The rifle itself uses compressed air, supplied by the Nautilus's pumps, as its propellant, overcoming the considerable resistance of the underwater medium, which is 855 times denser than air. Captain Nemo explains that the gun is effective because every shot is fatal; the animal falls dead instantly, even if only lightly hit. This weapon is first introduced to Professor Aronnax during preparations for the underwater hunting expedition in the Crespo Island forests, where Nemo demonstrates its superiority over traditional firearms. The electric gun is used in several key encounters: it brings down a magnificent sea otter and an albatross during the Crespo Island hunt, and later, during the battle with the giant squid, the crew finds that electric bullets are ineffective against the soft, yielding flesh of the cephalopods, forcing them to resort to axes and harpoons. The weapon thus embodies the Nautilus's reliance on electricity as its primary force, but also reveals its limitations against certain adversaries, underscoring the novel's theme that even advanced technology has boundaries when confronting the raw power of nature.
