A Castle’s Water Source

A Useful Spring
Daily Convenience
The fountain at Ringstetten Castle supplies water for the household. Bertalda also values it because she believes its water improves her complexion.
Its ordinary use makes it easy to overlook that water in this story can be a route for supernatural beings. The fountain links domestic life to the elemental world.
A Hidden Vulnerability
Kuhleborn has been appearing in the castle galleries, especially frightening Bertalda. Undine understands that the fountain gives her uncle access to the household.
What seems like a harmless source of water is therefore a breach in the boundary between the castle and the spirits.
The Stone Cover

A Protective Closure
Undine’s Orders
While Sir Huldbrand is away, Undine tells the servants to cover the fountain with a large stone. She says closing it is necessary to avoid a greater danger.
The water churns and hisses as the workers lower the stone. Undine inscribes unfamiliar characters on its surface to restrict her uncle’s power.
Authority at Home
Bertalda objects because she wants the fountain’s water for her skin. Undine insists that a wife and mistress of the castle may make household decisions.
The disagreement reveals how little Bertalda understands the danger behind the order. It also briefly restores Undine’s authority in a household where her husband has begun to favor her friend.
A Private Explanation

Why the Fountain Must Stay Shut
The Uncle’s Access
Undine explains that Kuhleborn reaches the castle through the fountain and that the inscription limits his intrusion. The seal cannot prevent human beings from raising the stone, so its safety depends on their cooperation.
She says Kuhleborn misreads the emotional life of the household, taking signs of sorrow and laughter as discord he must intervene in. His interference is dangerous even when he believes he is protecting her.
A Husband’s Promise
Sir Huldbrand understands Undine’s sacrifice and promises that the stone will remain. He briefly responds to her as the loving wife he had once cherished.
The promise appears to secure both the fountain and their marriage. Its force will be tested when Sir Huldbrand is absent and Bertalda again wants access to the water.
The Order Reversed

Beauty Before Safety
Bertalda’s Request
As she prepares for her wedding, Bertalda notices freckles on her neck and longs for the fountain water. A waiting-maid interprets her wish as permission to remove the stone.
Bertalda watches the work and approves, pleased that her wishes now carry influence. The workers find the stone easier to lift than expected, as if the water itself were helping.
A Figure Rises
A pale female shape emerges from the fountain and moves through the castle in tears. Bertalda recognizes the veiled figure as Undine and becomes unable to act.
The reopened passage turns a private wish into an irreversible breach. What had been treated as a matter of beauty releases the force that Undine had contained.
The Fatal Passage

The Fountain’s Price
A Warning at the Door
Undine reaches Sir Huldbrand’s chamber and says that the fountain has been opened and that he must die. He understands the danger and asks not to see a hideous face.
Instead, Undine reveals her familiar beauty. She embraces him with love and weeps as he dies in her arms.
Return to the Water
Undine tells the servants, “I have wept him to death,” then walks back toward the fountain. The reopened waterway has enabled her return and fulfilled the law attached to the broken marriage bond.
The fountain’s closure was a practical defense, but also a symbol of fidelity and boundary. Its removal exposes the cost of ignoring both.
