Simchas Torah

Simchas Torah is the setting for a night of intense public devotion and private ambivalence in Devorah’s adolescence. At the Satmar synagogue, the celebration centers on the Rebbe’s annual dance with the Torah, while Devorah watches from an overcrowded women’s gallery and struggles to reconcile the crowd’s reverence with her own uncertainty.
