Ishfanian Inquisition

Vainqueur the Dragon

The Ishfanian Inquisition was the former elite institution headquartered at Castle of Murmurin, a fortress built on a volcano in Ishfania. Its historical importance lies in the contradiction at the heart of the castle: the Inquisition fought demons from within and around the fortress, yet its own stronghold had been constructed over a sealed passage leading to Hell. When the institution disappeared, the castle remained as both a strategic military site and a Gothic container for the region’s suppressed demonic history.

Foundation and Military Function

The Ishfanian Inquisition used Castle of Murmurin as its headquarters and as an officer-training facility for the continent’s elite. The fortress therefore combined institutional authority, military education, and defensive architecture rather than serving merely as a noble residence. Its position on a large volcano bordering the western sea gave it a formidable natural setting, while the surrounding landscape consisted of brown badlands, sparse vegetation, arroyos, and the beginning of a vast red desert to the south.

At the start of the Century War, Brandon Maure sent his general, the Lich Furibon, to seize the castle. Furibon transformed it into a haven for fiends and awakened the volcano beneath the fortress. The Ishfanian Inquisition attempted to resist the demons, but the evidence presents the struggle as a losing defense rather than a successful expulsion. The conquest converted a center of elite training into the operational base of an undead and demonic power.

The Fortress over Hell

The Inquisition’s most consequential architectural decision was to build the fortress over a sealed gateway to Hell. Deep inside the castle, an ancient stone door stood chained shut and covered in runes. An inscription stated that the blessed Inquisition of Mithras the Eversun had closed the doors to the demesne of Isabelle, Mistress of Blades, warning that the bindings must never break or Ishfania would know Hell Unending.

This discovery reinterpreted the castle’s military history. The fortress had not simply been designed to repel invaders approaching from the outside. According to Victor Dalton, it had been intended to protect the region from invaders coming from inside the gate. The Inquisition thus occupied a liminal defensive position between the ordinary world and Hell, turning its headquarters into a permanent containment structure.

The seal also connected the Inquisition’s former mission to Brandon Maure’s family. Isabelle was identified as Brandon Maure’s mother, and Furibon was believed to have spent the century trying to open the sealed doors and supply his master with demonic armies for use against Gardemagne. The ruined institution consequently became evidence of an older conflict whose danger had never been confined to the surface war.

Collapse and Replacement

By the time Vainqueur Knightsbane and Victor Dalton encountered the castle, the Ishfanian Inquisition no longer controlled it. Furibon’s occupation had displaced the institution, and the surrounding population had been reduced to a small village beneath the mountain, with primitive encampments near the desert’s edge. The region’s ecological decline reinforced the sense of historical collapse: Vainqueur Knightsbane remembered that the area had been much greener two centuries earlier, whereas the present countryside was dominated by badlands and red desert.

The broader destruction of Ishfania was attributed to the Sablaris, a dark elf empire that had ruled much of the southern continent, Ishfania, and Barin. Cultists of Sablar the destroyer seized the empire and caused a magical cataclysm intended to hasten universal entropy, turning the empire into a red desert. Brandon Maure later took control of the ruins of Ishfania with summoned monsters. The Inquisition’s fall therefore formed part of a layered regional catastrophe: imperial conquest, magical devastation, demonic occupation, and the abandonment of the old defensive order.

After Vainqueur Knightsbane defeated Furibon, the castle was rebuilt as the center of his new power. The Kobold Rangers and other minions restored towers destroyed during the War of the Hoard, while gnolls transported the black stone used in the reconstruction. Some gnolls had formerly served Furibon under coercive conditions, retaining their lives and gold only by obeying him; after fleeing or seeking work at Murmurin, they were accepted into Vainqueur Knightsbane’s service, though twenty troublemakers had to be eaten before the workforce became obedient.

Legacy in the New State

The former Inquisition headquarters became the foundation of Vainqueur Knightsbane’s imperial claim. The castle’s lava, towers, food reserves, and vaults made it an ideal lair for his hoard, even though the surrounding territory was poor in livestock and cultivation. Its institutional past was not restored; instead, the fortress was absorbed into a monster-led political and economic order that included trained Kobold Rangers, recruited high-level monsters, and the opening of Nethermart, a fiendish magic-item shop in Murmurin.

The transformation culminated in Gardemagne’s recognition of Vainqueur Knightsbane as Emperor of Ishfania and of his territory as an official adventurer state. The proposed treaty required Gardemagne and Vainqueur Knightsbane’s state never to take arms against one another and to fight together against outside threats. In this arrangement, the territory once defended by the Ishfanian Inquisition acquired a new legal identity through diplomacy, while the old Inquisition survived mainly as architectural residue, historical memory, and the reason the castle concealed a gate to Hell.

The Ishfanian Inquisition therefore functions less as an active organization than as the absent center around which later powers define themselves. Its former headquarters supplies military legitimacy, its failed war explains the region’s ruin, and its sealed gate gives the castle a deeper supernatural purpose. The institution represents an older attempt to impose disciplined containment on demonic forces; its replacement by Vainqueur Knightsbane’s hoard-centered empire turns that defensive legacy into the setting for monster governance, commercial expansion, and renewed conflict.
