Lucian and Arianna's Arranged Marriage
VenomLucian and Arianna’s Arranged Marriage is a royal pact that makes Lucian’s future marriage to Arianna a political obligation rather than a personal choice. Intended to reunite Paegeia under one ruling family, the arrangement intrudes on Lucian and Elena’s relationship years before the wedding is due, setting a royal alliance against their hopes of remaining together.
Political Basis and Terms
The arrangement originated in a pact between the two ruling kings of Paegeia, made when Lucian and Arianna were children. Its stated purpose was to unite the kingdom once more under one ruling family. Arianna is the Princess of Areeth, and Lucian is expected to marry her two years later, after he graduates from Dragonia Academy. The pact thus ties their personal futures to a political project designed by their families.
The arrangement has immediate force despite its future date. Lucian’s parents have not approved of his relationship with Elena, and their opposition makes it difficult for the couple to spend time together. The prospect of the marriage is more than a distant ceremony: it shapes the limits placed on their present relationship and gives Arianna grounds to claim that Lucian is unavailable.
Lucian’s Opposition
Lucian rejects the political reasoning behind the pact. In conversation with Elena, he complains that his father should abandon the arrangement, arguing that alliances are unnecessary. Elena counters that Paegeia needs one ruler, but Lucian says he would accept Arianna ruling the whole kingdom if that meant he did not have to marry her. His response separates the political aim of unity from the marriage chosen as its means: he can contemplate a single ruler while refusing to make his own marriage the price of it.
His opposition does not amount to a resolution. Lucian remains subject to his parents’ decisions, and the couple’s conversations are interrupted before they can settle what the future holds. He hopes his parents will change their minds once they meet Elena, expressing confidence in her ability to alter their view. That hope stands against the formal weight of the childhood pact, without evidence that either the royal arrangement or parental resistance has yet been withdrawn.
Arianna’s Claim on the Future
Arianna uses the pact to assert authority over Elena’s relationship with Lucian. When Elena asks why she has approached her, Arianna says Lucian is off limits. She then warns that they will marry in two years and that Elena will only end up hurt. The warning presents the scheduled marriage as inevitable, in sharp contrast to Lucian’s rejection of it.
The confrontation becomes physical as well as verbal: Arianna grabs Elena’s arm, and her fingernails press dents into it. Elena does not accept the warning as a reason to retreat; she replies that she is willing to take the chance and turns the possibility of heartbreak back on Arianna. The encounter shows how the pact operates between the young people—not only as a future political commitment, but as a present weapon in a rivalry over Lucian.
Unsettled Consequences
The arrangement creates a conflict between dynastic planning and personal choice, but the available exchanges leave its outcome open. Lucian says he does not want to marry Arianna, Elena continues to hope that the marriage will not happen, and Arianna treats it as settled. His belief that his parents may change their minds offers a possible route around the pact, yet remains a hope rather than a change in the royal decision.
That unresolved tension is what gives the arrangement its force in the story. The pact’s intended unity at the level of the kingdom threatens separation at the level of the couple: it promises to bring ruling families together while placing Lucian and Elena’s relationship under strain. Neither Lucian’s refusal nor Elena’s willingness to risk being hurt has, in these scenes, undone the political commitment.
