The Encounter in Tokyo

Mistaken for Vond
A substitution
Takeshi is drawn into a staged encounter in which DL believes she is confronting Brock Vond. He is struck by the Death Palm without realizing what has happened.
A body keeps the score
The delayed effect appears in his pain, the holes in his clothes, and a physician’s diagnosis. An act performed in seconds becomes a long crisis that forces him to confront the possibility of death.
Searching for a Cure

Fear on the Flight Home
Failed explanations
Takeshi seeks medical answers but receives uncertain explanations of the Palm. His symptoms turn every bodily sensation into evidence that his life is running out.
A journey toward DL
He travels to California, following the possibility that DL can reverse what she did. Fear, drug use, and comic bravado coexist as he tries to reach the person who wounded him.
A Machine and an Obligation

Treatment at the Retreat
A risky intervention
The Kunoichi retreat uses the Puncutron and other treatments to reverse Takeshi’s condition. DL must assist the man she feared she had killed.
Survival is not closure
Takeshi recovers, but his survival binds the two together in a year-and-a-day expiation arrangement. He is alive again without being restored to the uncomplicated life he once had.
The Thanatoid Practice

Work Among the Unresolved
A new occupation
Takeshi establishes a practice addressing karmic injuries among the Thanatoids, people stranded between death and ordinary life. He treats debts and histories as matters that can be investigated and repaired.
Attention as method
His approach becomes faster and more administrative than traditional karmic correction. DL’s practical skepticism balances his ambition, while both confront the danger of reducing human suffering to a system.
A Different Kind of Union

Beyond the Celibacy Pact
A change in their terms
After the old restriction is removed, Takeshi and DL discover an intimacy that had been deferred for years. Their relationship is still shaped by risk, debt, and shared work.
A route rather than a cure
Neither has erased the past, but both become more capable of moving through it together. Their union reframes survival as an ongoing practice rather than a return to innocence.
