A Volunteer’s Apprehension

Courage with Doubt
Fear beneath the bravado
Mowry accepts the assignment but privately recognizes that a lone landing on a hostile world could be fatal. He imagines a predecessor already captured and the Kaitempi waiting for him.
A chosen risk
His fatalism becomes a means to continue, not proof that fear has disappeared. The mission begins with an uneasy mixture of resolve and self-mockery.
The First Month’s Frustration

Working Without Visible Results
Silence from the enemy
Mowry sees no public acknowledgment of his stickers, attacks, or threats. He worries that his effort may be futile and that the government is not even reacting.
Solitary morale
Without companions, he has nobody to share speculation or encouragement. A period of discouragement gives way to an intuition that danger is approaching.
A Sense of the Hunt

Instinct Before Evidence
Sudden flight
Mowry’s training tells him not to wait for proof if he feels a search closing in. He takes his bags and leaves by the rear route.
The raid arrives late
Hours afterward, the Kaitempi attack the building and nearly kill the landlord. Mowry never sees how close he came to capture, but his survival strengthens faith in instinct.
Refusing Extraction

Pride Against Procedure
An unreported escape
After a dangerous flight, Mowry considers contacting headquarters but expects an order to withdraw from Jaimec. He believes that leaving would amount to admitting defeat.
A consequential choice
He decides to continue toward a more disruptive phase instead. His pride strengthens his commitment but also exposes him to risks the command might have prevented.
The Capture and New Assignment

Captured, Then Redirected
Misidentified in the aftermath
Mowry reaches the Terran landing area and is placed in a prisoner compound because his disguise makes him look Sirian. He struggles to persuade sentries that he is Terran.
Another mission begins
Military Intelligence eventually identifies him and orders him to replace the missing operative on Artishain. Even apparent rescue brings no homecoming: Mowry is sent straight toward another wasp assignment.
