The Awkward Recruit

The Awkward Recruit
A Misplaced Officer
Hector H. Hector arrives from the Star Watch Academy with mathematical talent but little confidence, diplomacy, or physical grace. The military organization treats him as a problem to be reassigned.
Dr. Leoh initially sees him as noise rather than help. Hector stumbles through stations, conversations, and ordinary social situations.
Hidden Capacity
His awkwardness conceals an unusual mind. He notices patterns intuitively and approaches problems without the assumptions that control more polished officers.
Moral Refusal

Moral Refusal
The Offered Weapon
Geri Dulaq asks Hector to kill Major Par Odal in the real world. Hector is frightened by Odal but refuses to become an assassin.
His refusal costs him Geri’s affection for a time. It also isolates him from the simple heroic image that revenge would have provided.
A Defining Choice
Hector’s courage lies in declining an easy moral script. He chooses the Star Watch principle of protecting life over the emotional demand for vengeance.
The Teleporter

The Teleporter
Discovery Through Stress
Hector’s first teleportation occurs while protecting Geri inside the Dueling machine. His power emerges involuntarily, linking psychic talent to emotional pressure.
Later he learns to move objects and people between machines. The mathematical and physical implications exceed the military assumptions of the Star Watch.
Mature Improvisation
Hector escapes a Kerak starship by disrupting its power system and later crosses into Kerak through a Dueling machine. His old clumsiness remains, but it now serves invention and resistance.
