Chino retrieves Bernardo's hidden pistol

West Side Story

Chino Martin’s retrieval of Bernardo’s hidden pistol converts the news of Bernardo’s death into an armed pursuit of Tony Wyzek. Bernardo had entrusted Chino with the hiding place because he regarded him as a brother-in-law; once Chino finds the weapon, he makes his own decision to use it for revenge.

The News That Sets the Action in Motion

Chino tells Maria that Tony is alive and has just killed her brother. Maria refuses to believe him, strikes him with her fists, and insists that he is inventing the story. Her appearance—white dress, high heels, and lipstick—makes clear to Chino that she had prepared herself for Tony, not for him. The news therefore reaches Chino amid Maria’s disbelief and visible attachment to Tony, sharpening the personal stakes of what follows.

A police siren interrupts their confrontation. Chino pushes Maria aside and runs into the apartment, driven by what he understands as a task to accomplish. No one among Bernardo or the Sharks has ordered him to find Tony; Chino acts because he believes he has the strongest reason to do so. The sequence makes his pursuit an individual choice, even as it grows out of the gang’s violence and Bernardo’s death.

Finding Bernardo’s Pistol

Bernardo had told Chino where he kept the pistol because he considered Chino his brother-in-law. Chino reaches behind the bathtub and feels the compact, hard-wrapped object Bernardo concealed there. The hiding place gives the weapon a direct connection to Bernardo: it is not an impersonal gun Chino happens upon, but a concealed possession whose location had been shared with him in trust.

Chino unwraps the pistol, breaks it open, and checks that it is loaded. He then puts it in his pocket. The physical sequence is deliberate: locating the package becomes recovering the weapon, and checking its readiness makes the next step unmistakable. As he takes it, fear leaves him; he understands himself as having become an instrument of the trigger, with his purpose narrowed to finding Tony and killing him.

Maria’s Realization and the Pursuit

Maria enters the apartment after Chino has taken the pistol. She now believes what he told her, but Chino does not stop to explain or comfort her. He pushes past her because, in his mind, the only immediate priority is finding Tony. The pistol’s recovery thus ends not in safety or deliberation but in an active hunt, while Maria is left to absorb the truth about her brother and the danger facing Tony.

The scene closes on the consequences of Chino’s departure rather than on the pursuit itself. Maria briefly considers running after him, then kneels before the icons of the Holy Family and prays to the Virgin, first silently and then aloud in Spanish. Her plea that the news not be true stands against Chino’s certainty and purpose: he has taken Bernardo’s hidden weapon into the cycle of retaliation, while Maria can only plead against what it is about to do.
