Riff Lorton

West Side Story

Riff Lorton’s leadership is both a practical burden and a public test: with Tony Wyzek no longer directing the Jets, he must keep the gang moving, hold its members together, and establish that he can command respect. His impatience drives him toward action, while his loyalty to Tony and his readiness to face Bernardo shape the decisions that define his position.

Identity and Leadership

Riff is the Jets’ leader during Tony’s withdrawal from the group’s day-to-day direction. The change leaves a visible gap: Riff feels he has to show the Jets that he can keep them as active and consequential as they were under Tony. His authority is not uncontested. Action privately considers challenging him for command, but also recognizes the cost of taking the position: a challenger would have to give orders and lead for real. Remaining outside the role lets Action criticize Riff and pressure him to prove his worth, making Riff’s leadership an ongoing performance as well as a formal position.

That pressure has effects beyond the two men. In Action’s assessment, Riff’s efforts to hold the Jets together have made them cohesive enough that white gangs from other neighborhoods avoid conflict with them, while Black gangs keep their distance too. Action views the growing number of Puerto Ricans nearby as a threat and believes the Jets must respond where the police and mayor have failed to intervene. This is Action’s perspective, not a neutral account of Riff’s aims, but it shows how Riff’s leadership operates within an atmosphere of territorial hostility.

Restlessness and the Jets’ Activities

One evening, Riff checks a wristwatch he stole from a drunk the previous week and sees that it is nearly nine o’clock. The wait frustrates him: during daylight-saving time, the Jets must hold back until night has properly fallen before taking action. He has felt restless all day, eager to stir the gang into motion. His concern is not simply that the hours are passing; he needs to demonstrate that the Jets remain active and important under his command.

The ways he considers occupying them expose the predatory edge of that restless energy. The Jets might rob another drunk in Central Park, look for a couple to harass, or split up to find and assault gay men, taking their wallets and watches. These are contemplated group activities, not evidence of a completed attack in this episode. Their place in Riff’s thinking nevertheless shows how readily keeping the gang engaged can become an excuse for theft and violence against vulnerable targets.

Loyalty, Rivalry, and the Agreement with Bernardo

When the Jets debate what to do, Riff ends the discussion by deciding that Tony will accompany him to speak with Bernardo. He presents Tony’s loyalty as a reason for bringing him: Tony has never abandoned the group, and Riff insists that the neighborhood matters to him as much as it does to the Jets. By invoking Tony’s commitment while addressing Action, Riff also answers the challenge to his own authority. He can make the decision and give the group a course of action, even as he draws on the former leader’s standing.

Riff is pleased when Bernardo proposes meeting the following night, since the delay gives him time to find Tony. To affirm the agreement and demonstrate how a leader behaves, he extends his hand to Bernardo. They settle on the ground beneath the highway after Riff raises the park and the river as possible locations. The handshake turns a hostile encounter into a defined arrangement: the rival leaders have agreed on when and where their sides will meet for a fight.

Significance

Riff’s emerging command is tested in two linked ways: within the Jets, where Action’s criticism makes his authority precarious, and across the gang boundary, where he must deal directly with Bernardo. His impatience supplies momentum, but loyalty is central to how he acts: he seeks Tony’s presence because he trusts him and believes the territory matters to him. The agreement beneath the highway is therefore both a confrontation with the Sharks and a demonstration to the Jets that Riff can make decisions, bind himself to them, and lead the group into what follows.
