The city's indifference and continuity

West Side Story

The city's indifference and continuity are made visible in the gulf between a local tragedy and the vast urban life around it: even killings beneath the highway reach only a small part of New York, while the city itself continues beyond the people who live in it.

A tragedy at uneven scale

The news of the killings travels through a limited area. Ten streets and perhaps ten, twenty, or thirty thousand people may know what happened, but millions of residents and tens of thousands of streets do not. Only a few newspapers report the murders beneath the highway, and their accounts offer scant detail and incomplete information. The contrast makes the tragedy neither unreal nor universally recognized: its immediate reach is intense, but its place in the city's much larger field of attention is small.

Saturday night beyond the tragedy

The city’s limited awareness is set against an ordinary Saturday night, when most people are asleep or enjoying the one evening of the week set aside for letting go. Around the unreported or imperfectly reported deaths, lives continue in sharply different states: people love, hate, desire, encourage one another, and die in peace, pain, or violence. Elsewhere, solitary people look to the stars and moon with unspoken appeals and hopes for fulfilled wishes and someone they can trust. Private longing and the local catastrophe coexist without becoming the concern of the whole city.

Continuity beyond individual lives

Some wishes come true, but their fulfillment makes no difference to the city. It has been built to endure beyond the lives of all its inhabitants, placing individual happiness and loss against an urban permanence that does not depend on either. The closing thought extends that contrast into the future: unless something changes, the same condition will persist. The city’s continuity is not presented as comfort for those who suffer; it is the scale against which their brief, consequential lives pass largely unnoticed.
