Under the highway
West Side StoryUnder the highway is the site selected for the Jets’ and Sharks’ planned duel, turning a choice of ground into a destination toward which both groups move under cover of darkness. The location matters in the immediate action as a gathering place: the leaders approach from separate directions, the gangs assemble, and preparations begin for a face-to-face confrontation.
Selection of the Site
When Riff Lorton asks whether the duel should take place at the park or by the river, Bernardo proposes Under the highway. Riff accepts the suggestion with a nod. The exchange settles where the gangs will meet, after they have already agreed to fight; the site is therefore not an incidental backdrop but part of the arrangement that makes the promised confrontation concrete.
The Night Approach
At ten minutes to nine, Riff checks his watch and tells the Jets to disperse and take the route toward the highway. He warns them to watch for Schrank, who has been following him throughout the day. The Jets then disappear into the darkness. On a nearby street, Bernardo gives the Sharks similar instructions, setting the two groups in motion toward the same ground while keeping their approaches separate.
Bernardo arrives after letting a car pass and running across the street. He descends the embankment slowly, careful not to twist an ankle. His eyes adjust to the dimness, allowing him to see that the Sharks have kept their jackets on over their T-shirts despite the heat. The approach gives the place a specific physical shape in the scene: there is a street to cross and a slope to descend before Bernardo reaches the gathering area.
Assembly and Significance
Bernardo announces himself with a brief signal. Chino Martin and another Shark call his name, while a Jet remarks that the Latino leader has finally arrived. Bernardo orders the Sharks to spread out and keep their eyes on him. The instruction establishes him as the figure directing their formation as they gather beneath the highway.
As the encounter advances, Bernardo begins removing his shirt, and Chino offers to second him. Bernardo rolls his shoulders and checks that his knife is in his pocket before declaring himself ready. Riff answers that his own man is ready, and the leaders direct the combatants to meet at the center and shake hands. The location thus becomes the staging ground for the duel’s formal opening: the gangs arrive, their leaders take their places, and the opposing sides are brought together at its center.
