Coniston

When You Were Mine

Coniston is the destination Kitty gives Isobel as she flees alone, offering the possibility of temporary shelter through Kitty’s relatives and a contact at Winheld Hall. It stands in the account as a practical but still uncertain refuge: Isobel knows where she is meant to go, yet has no clear means of finding the person who could help her there.

A Proposed Refuge

Kitty explains that she has relatives in Coniston, in the Lake District, who can give Isobel somewhere warm and dry to stay while she decides what to do. Their help is explicitly temporary; they cannot keep her for long. Coniston is therefore presented not as a settled home but as the first possible place of safety in a precarious escape.

Kitty gives Isobel a specific connection to follow: her cousin Annie works at Winheld Hall, and Isobel is to say that Kitty sent her. This instruction turns a broad destination into a tentative plan with a named intermediary. The evidence identifies Winheld Hall as Annie’s workplace, but does not establish that Isobel reaches either Annie or the hall.

The Distance Between Destination and Arrival

Isobel repeats the directions to herself as Winheld Hall in Coniston, but the words swim through her mind as she considers the scale of what lies ahead. She has never been allowed out alone without a chaperone; now she is preparing to travel by herself in the middle of the night, carrying only a few coins and the clothes on her back. Coniston’s promise of shelter is set against the unfamiliarity and exposure of the journey required to reach it.

After walking for much of a day through fields and around towns, Isobel rests in long grass at the edge of trees. She has avoided farmers and the eyes of people in passing carriages, and although she has seen no sign of her uncle or his servants, she remains aware that their absence from sight does not prove she is safe. With only two apples remaining from those she took from an orchard, she eats one and wonders how she will get to Coniston while she still has the strength.

An Unresolved Route

The question of how to reach Kitty’s cousin remains open. Isobel recalls that Kitty said the Lakes, but does not know how someone is supposed to find Annie in the Lake District. That uncertainty gives Coniston a double significance in this episode: it is the direction of hoped-for assistance, and a place whose practical accessibility Isobel cannot yet solve. The narrative stops short of an arrival, keeping the proposed refuge distinct from the difficult, unfinished journey toward it.
