Gentoo penguin

Gentoo penguins are encountered by Bee Branch on the rocky approach to Port Lockroy, where they are guarding their nests. Their brief appearance makes the landing a passage through an inhabited nesting place, not simply an empty shore.

Nesting Presence

As Bee scrambles across the rocks toward a wooden ramp and the station entrance, she avoids the Gentoo penguins gathered around their rock nests. The birds are described as singing, a sound that accompanies her careful progress over the landing ground.

Role in the Landing

The penguins are not described as attacking Bee; she takes care to avoid them as she crosses their nesting area. Their presence gives the shore its own activity and constraints while Bee hurries toward Port Lockroy, where she hopes to find her missing mother.
