Saint Bernadette Photo Locket

Where'd You Go Bernadette

The Saint Bernadette Photo Locket is a keepsake through which Elgin Branch’s gift reaches Bernadette Fox by way of Bee Branch. Inside is a photograph of Saint Bernadette; its history ties the object to Bernadette’s architecture prize, while its arrival gives Bee her first sight of a necklace central to her mother’s past.

Description and Provenance

The locket is carried in a small black velvet bag secured with a gold silk rope. Elgin gives the bag to Bee and asks her to make sure Bernadette receives it. The locket inside holds a photograph of Saint Bernadette, and Elgin had given the necklace to Bernadette after she won her architecture prize.

Passage Through the Family

Bee delivers the bag to Bernadette, who recognizes what it contains before opening it: she presses the bag to her cheek and closes her eyes. When she unties the cord and draws out the locket, Bee realizes this is the first time she has seen it. The gift thus travels from Elgin, through their daughter, back to Bernadette, carrying a shared family history in a small physical object.

Significance in the Encounter

The locket makes Elgin’s presence felt through an act of giving, even as Bee is the one who brings it to her mother. Bernadette’s gesture toward the velvet bag and the photograph inside marks the keepsake as more than a piece of jewelry: it connects her to the achievement for which Elgin gave it and lets Bee encounter a part of her mother’s life she had not seen before.
