Schächental

William Tell

Schächental is located at the edge of Bürglen in Uri: the play places its entrance just beyond the settlement, anchoring the valley in the geography of the Forest Cantons. Its explicit appearance is brief, but the reference gives the surrounding mountain landscape a concrete place-name and situates a character within it.

Position in Uri

In a scene addressed to Hedwig, a monk identifies her location as Bürglen, in Uri, at the entrance to Schächental. The wording fixes the valley in relation to both a settlement and a larger canton: it is not presented as a remote, undefined expanse, but as a named landscape reached from Bürglen. The exchange also makes the location practical, establishing where Hedwig is as the monk asks whether she is alone and whether her husband is there.

Mountain Landscape and Weather

The play’s broader Swiss setting is rendered through sharply changing natural conditions. Green meadows lie far beneath vapor; a rumbling, cracking sound comes from among the mountains as cloud shadows cross the scene. In another passage, thunder and wind accompany the warning that the south wind has risen and the lake is swelling. These details establish a world in which weather and terrain are active forces, although the text does not specifically assign each of these effects to Schächental itself.

Place in the Dramatic Geography

Elsewhere, Wilhelm Tell describes directing the men on his vessel to exert themselves until they reach a shelving crag, which he regards as the point beyond immediate danger. That episode belongs to the play’s wider geography of lake, mountain, and perilous passage, rather than being explicitly located in Schächental. Read alongside the valley’s identification at Bürglen, it shows how named places and physical features make the Swiss landscape legible as an environment that shapes movement and exposure to danger. Schächental’s specific narrative function remains narrower: it marks the threshold of a valley within Uri and helps orient the scene around Hedwig.
