A Life Before Teaching

A Life Before Teaching
A different career
Bridger once worked as a systems administrator and had no experience teaching students. He also had a human wife, a Navajo woman who accepted his woodwalker identity.
A family under pressure
Their son Joseph was a woodwalker who struggled with life between worlds and began using drugs. His eventual disappearance and the collapse of the marriage left Bridger with grief that he rarely discusses in class.
The Years of Drift

The Years of Drift
Withdrawal into animal life
Bridger says that he abandoned his former life and spent much of his time as a coyote on the edge of town. He scavenged and let his days pass without direction.
A narrow interruption
A driver deliberately tries to hit him with a pickup truck. The near-collision forces Bridger to recognize that he still has a life and can choose to do something useful with it.
The Teacher's New Role

The Teacher's New Role
A second chance
Bridger hears about Clearwater High and applies for a teaching position. Lissa Clearwater hires him despite his lack of prior classroom experience.
Purpose through service
He becomes an instructor in behavior and survival, using experience rather than abstract authority to guide students. His career change turns personal failure into a way to help young woodwalkers avoid similar isolation.
Trusting Carag

Trusting Carag
Private instruction
Bridger secretly teaches Carag relaxation and transformation methods after seeing how Ellwood's classroom pressure affects him. He asks Carag to keep the lessons quiet to avoid antagonizing his colleague.
Risk accepted
When Ellwood discovers the lessons, Bridger ends them rather than risk a damaging staff conflict. He still leaves Carag a final scent-based technique, showing care even when direct help is no longer possible.
The Rescue and Recognition

The Rescue and Recognition
A teacher answers danger
Bridger joins the search when Carag disappears and reaches him after the encounter with the hunter. He carries Carag to safety and remains present during the recovery.
Trust confirmed
Carag tells Bridger that his advice helped save his life. Their relationship moves beyond instruction into earned mutual trust, giving Bridger evidence that his return to purposeful work matters.
