Artifact weapons
World of Warcraft Battle For Azeroth, Gameplay, Tips, Characters, Builds, Leveling, Raids, Weapons, Items, Game Guide UnofficialArtifact weapons are the signature progression objects of the Legion era and the principal system that Battle for Azeroth replaces. Their importance lies not only in their equipment value but in the way they organize character growth: each class specialization receives an artifact with a unique ability, special features, and an associated skill tree that players unlock over time.
Definition and Function
Artifact weapons serve as specialization-specific advancement tools rather than ordinary pieces of equipment. The system grants every class specialization its own progression structure, allowing players to unlock skill-tree abilities as the artifact develops. This gives the weapon a role that extends beyond combat statistics: it becomes a visible framework for building and customizing a character’s capabilities.
The system belongs to the broader progression design of World of Warcraft, in which major expansions introduce new features, raids, dungeons, zones, and level increases. Within that pattern, Artifact weapons represent the central feature of the Legion era, concentrating specialization growth and distinctive abilities in a single class-linked object.
Replacement by the Heart of Azeroth
Battle for Azeroth removes Artifact weapons as the expansion’s primary advancement system. Their replacement is the Heart of Azeroth, a medallion that players upgrade with Azerite, the expansion’s new resource. The change is therefore not a simple deletion of progression: the function of long-term advancement is transferred from a weapon to a separate wearable item and a resource-based upgrading process.
Upgrading the Heart of Azeroth unlocks new traits on other pieces of armor. This arrangement relocates customization from the artifact itself into the character’s broader armor set. The result is intended to provide customization options for every class that were not previously possible, even though the Heart of Azeroth is described as having an impact comparable to that of Artifact weapons.
Continuity and Systemic Change
The transition preserves the scale of importance associated with Artifact weapons while changing where that importance is expressed. Under the former system, specialization skill trees and weapon abilities made the artifact the focal point of development. Under the new system, Azerite investment in the Heart of Azeroth activates traits distributed across armor, making equipment combinations more central to customization.
This is a change in progression architecture rather than the disappearance of character development. The older artifact system is replaced, but its major design promise remains: players continue to improve a defining progression object and use that improvement to open new possibilities for their class. The contrast between the two systems marks the movement from the Legion era into Battle for Azeroth and explains why the replacement is one of the expansion’s most consequential mechanical changes.
Relation to the Wider Expansion
Artifact weapons are also part of Battle for Azeroth’s larger pattern of retaining some established forms while introducing new ones. The expansion continues to support battleground PvP, arena PvP, raids, standard dungeons, and Mythic+ dungeons, while adding systems such as Island Expeditions, Warfronts, War Mode, Azerite, and the Heart of Azeroth. Against this background, replacing artifacts distinguishes the new expansion from a mere continuation of Legion.
The replacement also fits Battle for Azeroth’s broader emphasis on flexible progression and faction conflict. As level scaling allows older zones such as Northern Barrens to adjust between levels 10 and 60, the Heart of Azeroth gives advancement a new cross-equipment structure. Artifact weapons therefore remain significant even after their removal: they define the system the new expansion must supersede, and their absence makes the Heart of Azeroth the clearest symbol of the transition to a new model of customization.
