Island Expeditions are a cooperative player-versus-environment mode centered on a three-player team competing against an opposing group of Advanced AI enemies. Their decisive feature is that cooperation does not remove competition: players must coordinate against enemies that imitate player behavior while gathering resources faster than the opposition within a compact, changing scenario.

Format and Participants

Island Expeditions are described as three-player scenarios. The player team faces three enemies represented by Advanced AI, with the opposing side standing in for the enemy faction. The mode therefore translates the broader faction conflict into a contained encounter in which a small cooperative group confronts an organized artificial opponent rather than merely moving through a passive environment.

The Advanced AI is significant because the enemies are presented as acting in ways similar to players. They can pursue roles proactively and work toward filling class roles, giving the opposing team a degree of organization rather than reducing it to a predictable collection of targets. The expedition consequently asks players to respond to an active rival force whose behavior can shape the course of the scenario.

Randomized Scenario and Objective

The mode draws inspiration from action role-playing games. Its areas are randomized, so the geography and experience of one expedition can be mixed up from the next. This variation makes navigation, enemy response, and resource collection part of a recurring process of adaptation rather than a single fixed route learned once and repeated mechanically.

The immediate objective is to obtain resources faster than the opposition. Success is therefore measured by comparative efficiency: the team must gather resources while contending with enemies pursuing a similar goal. The expedition’s conflict is not framed solely as elimination of the opposing force; it is a race in which movement, role coordination, and the ability to react to a changing area determine how much the team can secure before the scenario ends.

Duration and Place in the Mode Structure

An Island Expedition is expected to last approximately 15 to 20 minutes. That limited duration gives the mode a sharply defined rhythm. Players enter a randomized space, organize their efforts against the artificial team, accelerate resource collection, and reach a result within a session short enough to be repeated.

Island Expeditions belong to the cooperative side of the expansion’s player-versus-environment design, but the evidence also describes a player-versus-environment variant in which the opposing AI teams can be replaced by teams from the enemy faction. This creates a contrast between fighting artificial opponents and confronting enemy-faction players while preserving the expedition’s basic competitive structure.

Strategic Significance

Island Expeditions connect cooperation, artificial intelligence, randomized space, and resource competition in one loop. Players need one another because the scenario is built for a three-person team, yet the team’s shared work is constantly judged against an opposing force. The AI’s proactive pursuit of roles and class composition makes group formation itself part of the challenge, while the randomized areas prevent the mode from being reduced to a wholly predetermined sequence.

The mode also turns time into a central resource. A 15-to-20-minute limit and a race for faster acquisition reward teams that can move, fight, assign roles, and adjust quickly. In that structure, the expedition offers a compact expression of the expansion’s faction conflict: the enemy is not only something to defeat, but a rival that is gathering, adapting, and competing for the same resource before the clock runs out.
