Upgrading the Heart of Azeroth

Rather than advancing a class specialization through an Artifact weapon’s skill tree, players invest the expansion’s new resource, Azerite, into a medallion whose growth unlocks traits on other armor pieces. The system therefore shifts progression from a single class-linked weapon toward a broader equipment-based structure, while preserving a comparable level of impact and opening customization options that were previously unavailable.
From Artifact Weapons to a New Progression Model
Artifact weapons had been a major feature of Legion. Each class specialization received an Artifact with distinctive abilities and special features, including a skill tree that players unlocked over time. Battle for Azeroth replaces that system rather than simply adding another layer to it, establishing a clear transition between the two expansions’ progression models.
The replacement is the Heart of Azeroth, a medallion that players upgrade with Azerite. Its role is deliberately comparable to that of the former Artifacts: the text presents its influence as being at the same general level as the Artifact system’s impact. The change is therefore not a retreat from large-scale character progression, but a redesign of where that progression is stored and how its benefits are distributed.
Azerite, Armor Traits, and Customization
Azerite is the new resource used to strengthen the Heart of Azeroth. Each upgrade advances the medallion and, in turn, unlocks new traits on other pieces of armor. Progression consequently reaches beyond the central item itself: the Heart of Azeroth acts as the mechanism through which additional equipment gains selectable or otherwise new properties.
This arrangement provides every class with new customization possibilities. Whereas the Artifact model concentrated special features and skill-tree development in a weapon associated with a specialization, the Heart of Azeroth connects its upgrades to armor and allows character choices to be expressed through several equipment pieces. The result is a more distributed form of customization, tied to the player’s continued collection and use of Azerite-powered gear.
Place Within Battle for Azeroth’s Wider Systems
The Heart of Azeroth belongs to an expansion that raises the level cap to about 120 and adds new zones, dungeons, raids, and features. Its resource loop is therefore part of a larger progression environment rather than an isolated item mechanic. Azerite also appears as a reward associated with the expansion’s Warfront activities, where players gather resources, build structures, destroy enemy troops, and ultimately assault an opposing base; that resource is explicitly used to upgrade armor.
The replacement does not eliminate the expansion’s older forms of play. Battleground PvP, arena PvP, raids, standard dungeons, and returning Mythic+ dungeons remain supported, while the expansion adds about ten dungeons and a raid. The Heart of Azeroth gives these continuing activities a new progression destination: play across the established game modes can feed into a system that improves armor and supplies further customization.
Connections to Character and Account Progression
The expansion’s other leveling systems show how the Heart of Azeroth fits into a wider network of advancement. Characters can gain experience through Recruit-a-Friend bonuses, begin at different levels depending on class or race, and use Heirlooms that scale with the character and provide experience bonuses. Heirlooms are generally bind on account, so once purchased they can be shared across characters, including alternate characters on different servers or on the opposite faction, with only a few exceptions.
Unlike those account-wide leveling aids, the Heart of Azeroth is described primarily as a character-progression medallion whose upgrades unlock armor traits. Its significance lies less in accelerating the journey to a level cap than in giving the journey a persistent equipment consequence. Azerite gathered during the expansion becomes a means of converting ordinary play into stronger armor choices and class customization.
Significance of the Replacement
The move from Artifact weapons to the Heart of Azeroth marks one of Battle for Azeroth’s most consequential mechanical changes. The old system’s specialization-based weapon trees are replaced by a medallion-and-armor arrangement in which Azerite powers the central item and its upgrades activate traits elsewhere. This preserves the sense that progression should materially shape a character while changing the location, rhythm, and expression of that power.
The system’s importance is thus both practical and structural. Practically, upgrading the Heart of Azeroth improves access to armor traits and new customization options. Structurally, it makes Azerite the connective resource between expansion activities, equipment advancement, and the player’s evolving character build, turning the replacement of Artifacts into a broader reorganization of progression in Battle for Azeroth.
