A Tail in Tokyo

A Tail in Tokyo
Surveillance uncovered
Richard Lovelace Henderson discovers a microphone beneath the table at his regular bar. He identifies the watcher as one of Tanaka’s men and openly curses the surveillance.
Bond understands that Tanaka already knows the visitors are discussing him. Henderson is less concerned with secrecy than with making clear that he will not be intimidated.
A warning beneath the banter
Henderson’s anger carries useful information: the Japanese service has watched him for years, and its methods are discreet and persistent. Bond must assume that his arrival is known even when no one acknowledges it.
The surveillance also establishes that intelligence work in Tokyo is social as well as technical. Personal familiarity does not prevent observation; it can make observation easier.
The Stolen Wallet

The Stolen Wallet
A familiar figure
A masked passenger jostles Bond and steals his wallet. Bond notices a stocky figure wearing a distinctive black hat and mask, but the thief disappears into the crowd.
Tiger discourages Bond from reporting the theft, explaining that police involvement would create unwanted questioning and unlikely recovery. The loss appears minor, but Bond remembers the man.
Suspicion carried forward
Bond later glimpses someone resembling the thief in the crowd at Toba and then at a restaurant. Tiger sees no reason to treat these encounters as significant.
Bond’s attention to the repeated figure becomes important when the man appears again on the road to Fukuoka. The apparent petty crime has concealed a more dangerous surveillance operation.
The Roadside Pursuit

The Roadside Pursuit
A pursuer unmasked
Bond recognizes the motorcycle rider as the suspected thief and insists that the car pursue him. When the rider reaches inside his jacket, Bond leaps from the car and knocks him from the motorcycle.
The police corporal kills the man in the struggle. Tiger identifies a tattoo as the mark of a Black Dragon Society agent and finds Bond’s wallet among the dead man’s belongings.
The stakes rise
The diary indicates that the agent had been following Tanaka’s movements. Tiger recognizes that the Castle of Death’s owner may know more about his service than expected.
The pursuit confirms that the threat extends beyond the estate’s walls. Bond has exposed an enemy’s surveillance, but the encounter also raises the possibility that his own presence has been reported.
