Full moon

You Only Live Twice

The full moon serves as a near-term boundary in James Bond’s days with Kissy Suzuki: with only two days remaining before it, he puts aside the prospect of returning to his dangerous life and treats the present as borrowed time.

An Approaching Boundary

James Bond reckons that the full moon is only two days away. Its approach gives his temporary escape a limit: he knows he will have to return to what he regards as the dark, dirty life he chose for himself. For the moment, however, he pushes that prospect from his thoughts.

The Stolen Days

Bond resolves to make the remaining two days happy and lucky for Kissy Suzuki. He imagines them simply, in the company of Kissy, their boat, a bird, and the sea, with her gathering seashells. The moon therefore frames a short interval of chosen calm, set against the return to duty and danger that Bond expects beyond it.
