Oubliette trap

You Only Live Twice

The Oubliette trap is a concealed, seesaw-like floor in the Castle of Death that drops James Bond into a pit and triggers an alarm. It transforms a seemingly empty passage into the mechanism of his capture: Bond crosses its exact midpoint, plunges into darkness, and wakes injured and confused in the trap’s straw-covered pit.

Construction and Concealment

The trap occupies a twenty-foot passage whose polished boards appear ordinary. As Bond creeps forward, music from Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” comes from a door at the far end, providing cover for his movement and drawing his attention down the corridor. The guard’s earlier activity behind a door has a different purpose: he has been adjusting the lever that sets the trap. The apparently empty passage conceals the danger until Bond reaches the point where the mechanism can act.

Activation and Fall

With no warning, the boards swivel noiselessly around a central axis as Bond steps across the exact halfway point. The floor tilts like a seesaw, and Bond loses his footing, scrabbling for a grip as he hurtles into the black void below. Once his weight leaves the platform, it swings back into position above him. The trap’s mechanism also triggers an alarm bell, turning his fall into a signal to the castle’s guards. The impact leaves him unconscious.

Capture and Disorientation

Bond regains consciousness in the pit, struggling toward a pinpoint of light while blows land on his face. In his pain and confusion, he mistakes the handfuls of straw he is holding for awabis and calls for Kissy Suzuki to stop hitting him. As his awareness returns, he recognizes Kono, the guard, and understands that the infiltration has gone badly wrong. He remembers his cover as a deaf and mute Japanese miner from Fukuoka and consciously resumes it, appearing blank and bowing rather than revealing that he understands the situation.

Consequences

The trap has not merely hidden Bond from view: it has deposited him in a guarded cell and left him unable to continue his approach unnoticed. Naked except for his black cotton ninja underpants, he follows a guard out of the straw-strewn pit. He is then brought into a library-like room where another guard lays out his ninja suit and the incriminating contents of his pockets in front of Ernst Stavro Blofeld and Irma Bunt. The silent drop, alarm, fall, and exposure form a chain of consequences that converts Bond’s infiltration into capture.
