Looters on the Road

Disorder Behind the Armies
Opportunistic Violence
Guerrillas follow the armies not from disciplined patriotism but from the prospect of looting. Their movement turns battlefield confusion into civilian danger.
The Plantation Target
They identify the Ruthven home as valuable and attempt to enter despite the presence of wounded soldiers. Their threat forces the Home Guard into action.
The Horse Theft

Violence at the Stable
Criminal Seizure
Pete Gendron and fellow guerrillas try to steal horses from the Ruthven property. Their claim that the animals serve the Confederate cause cannot conceal private theft.
Jack’s Response
When a boy is shot, Jack fires back and wounds Gendron. The confrontation shows how guerrilla warfare collapses the boundary between military action and criminal predation.
The Captive Camp

Outlaw Custody
Cave Imprisonment
The guerrillas hold Jack, Old Ben, and Columbus Washington in Guerrilla Cave. Drinking, gambling, and cruelty replace military discipline.
Mackey’s Proxy Force
The camp operates as an extension of Mackey’s scheme. The outlaws are paid or manipulated to control people and evidence.
Escape in the Storm

Breaking the Camp
Opportunity
A storm and a distracted guard give Jack time to free himself and his companions. They disarm the remaining sentinels and flee down the mountain.
Nature as Cover
Thunder, darkness, and rain hide the escape. The same wilderness that shelters the outlaws briefly becomes an ally of their prisoners.
The Outlaws’ End

Camp Destroyed
Military Sweep
A battle in the mountains kills many of the guerrillas, including those who held Jack and Pete Gendron. Their camp is searched after the fighting.
Evidence Recovered
The search yields stolen goods and the tin box from the wreck. The fall of the outlaws therefore destroys both their criminal power and Mackey’s material advantage.
