The Family Voyage

The Nautilus Journey
A Family at Sea
Colonel Stanton travels with Laura Stanton and their young son Jack aboard the Nautilus. They intend to secure property connected with Laura’s family.
Disaster Approaches
The voyage ends when the vessel strikes the coast near Hemlock Bluff. The family is separated before Stanton understands that Jack and Laura have reached shore.
A Father Presumed Dead

Separated at Sea
Lost in the Storm
Stanton clings to a spar and is carried away from the wreck. Believing his wife and son drowned, he loses the family he cannot reach.
Survival Without Knowledge
A passing ship rescues him, but the shock and exposure damage his body and mind. His survival becomes invisible to the people who save Jack.
Years of Confinement

Institutional Captivity
Misdiagnosed and Exploited
Stanton is placed in an asylum after the wreck. Dr. Mackey, then using another name, records him as incurable and extracts information about his family and property.
Stolen History
Mackey’s abuse prevents Stanton from searching for Jack. The father’s absence is therefore caused not by abandonment but by deliberate manipulation.
The Wounded Colonel

Memory Returning
Fevered Speech
After being wounded during battle, Stanton speaks of the Nautilus, Laura, and a son named Jack. His delirium reveals memories that ordinary consciousness has kept inaccessible.
Recognition from Afar
Alice Ruthven notices that his face resembles Jack’s. The colonel’s wound unexpectedly opens the path toward family restoration.
Reunion with Jack

Father and Son
Proof and Recognition
Stanton identifies Laura’s ring, handkerchief, and clothing, then recognizes Jack as the child he lost. The objects make personal memory legally and emotionally credible.
A Shared Future
Jack embraces him despite the political divide between Confederate boy and Federal father. Their reunion turns wartime opposition into familial trust.
